The complex includes Håkonshallen, a royal ceremonial hall built in the 13th century, and Rosenkrantztårnet, a tower expanded during the Renaissance. You can walk the grounds freely and step inside both buildings to get a real sense of how Bergen functioned as a seat of royal power during the Middle Ages.

Fantoft Stave Church is a reconstruction of a wooden stave church originally built around 1150 in Fortun, Sogn. It was moved to Bergen in the 19th century to save it from demolition, then destroyed by arson in 1992 before being faithfully rebuilt. The dark, intricately carved structure sits in a quiet forested area in the Fana borough. The gap between its ancient design and its relatively recent reconstruction gives it an unexpectedly moving quality.

Viewpoints

Fløibanen Funicular & Mount Fløyen is the most popular way to get above the city, and the view from the top justifies the short queue at the bottom station. The funicular climbs 320 metres in about eight minutes, depositing you on a hilltop with panoramic views over the harbour, the surrounding mountains, and the islands beyond. At the summit there are walking trails through pine forest, a café, and a playground. It works just as well for a quiet afternoon walk as it does for a quick sightseeing stop.

Ulriken Cable Car & Mount Ulriken takes you to the highest of Bergen's seven mountains at 643 metres, and the perspective from up here is noticeably different from Fløyen. On a clear day you can see all the way across the fjords to the open sea. The cable car ride itself is dramatic, and once at the top you can hike along the ridge or simply sit with a coffee and watch the weather roll in from the Atlantic. In Bergen, it often does.

Art and culture

KODE Art Museums of Bergen is one of the largest museum complexes for art, craft, design, and music in the Nordic region, spread across four buildings along the Lille Lungegårdsvann lake in the city centre. The collections range from Old Masters and Norwegian Romantics to decorative arts and contemporary design. Each building has its own character and focus, so it's worth checking what's on in each before you visit rather than trying to cover everything in a single afternoon.

Troldhaugen – Edvard Grieg Museum is the villa where composer Edvard Grieg lived and worked for the last 22 years of his life, on a wooded peninsula south of the city centre. His composing hut, a tiny timber cabin by the water where he retreated to write, is still standing and still feels remarkably personal. The museum stages regular concerts in the on-site Troldsalen hall, and Grieg and his wife Nina are buried in a cliff-face tomb on the grounds.

Gamle Bergen Museum (Old Bergen Museum) is an open-air collection of around 55 wooden buildings relocated from different parts of Bergen and reassembled into a walkable 18th- and 19th-century streetscape. Costumed guides bring the houses to life, explaining how a merchant, a fisherman, or a seamstress would have lived. It's an unusually concrete way to understand how the city developed before the industrial era.

Bergen Fish Market (Fisketorget) has been a working market on the waterfront for centuries, and it remains one of the most direct ways to understand what this city is actually built on. You can buy fresh shrimp by the bag, try a bowl of fish soup, or pick up smoked salmon to take away. The outdoor stalls are liveliest in summer, but the covered indoor section operates year-round and is worth a visit whatever the weather.
