Built for Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a Persian nobleman who served as a Mughal minister, it was the first Mughal structure to use white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones. The delicate lattice screens and intricate pietra dura work make it a masterclass in restraint.

Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra lies on the northern edge of the city and marks the resting place of the great Mughal emperor Akbar. The complex blends Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian architectural elements, reflecting Akbar's own pluralistic worldview. Deer roam freely through the surrounding gardens, giving the whole site an unexpectedly peaceful atmosphere.

Chini Ka Rauza (China Tomb) is the tomb of Afzal Khan Shirazi, Shah Jahan's Grand Vizier, built around 1635. Its name comes from the glazed ceramic tiles, imported from Persia and China, that once covered the entire exterior in vivid blue and turquoise patterns. Much of the tilework has faded or fallen away over the centuries, but enough remains to give you a clear sense of how dazzling it must once have looked.

Historic religious sites

Jama Masjid Agra stands near the Agra Fort and is one of the largest mosques in the city, built during the reign of Shah Jahan. The courtyard is wide and calm, and the striped domes give it a visual character distinct from the more famous Jama Masjid in Delhi. It remains an active place of worship, so visiting outside of prayer times is respectful and also gives you more room to take in the architecture.

Mankameshwar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, on the banks of the Yamuna River. It's one of Agra's oldest religious sites, believed to be thousands of years old, and draws a steady stream of local devotees rather than tourists. The riverside setting and the rhythm of daily rituals here offer a completely different side of the city from its Mughal monuments.

Dayal Bagh Temple is the memorial and spiritual centre of the Radha Soami faith, dedicated to Soamiji Maharaj, the movement's founder. What makes it visually remarkable is its ongoing construction. Work has continued for over a century, with craftspeople still adding intricate marble inlay and carved stonework. The result is a building that feels simultaneously ancient and alive, and the level of craftsmanship on display rivals anything else in the city.

Natural spaces

Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden) sits directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, and the view from here, especially at dusk, is one of the best in Agra. The Mughal garden was originally designed to align perfectly with the Taj, and the octagonal pool at its centre once reflected the mausoleum's image. It's far quieter than the Taj complex itself, making it a good place to slow down and take in the panorama without the crowds.

Fatehpur Sikri is a short drive from the city centre but well worth the trip. Built by Emperor Akbar in the 1570s as a new Mughal capital, it was abandoned within decades, possibly due to water shortages, and left almost perfectly intact. Walking through the red sandstone courtyards, palaces, and the grand Buland Darwaza gateway feels like stepping into a city that simply stopped one afternoon and never started again.
