Bristol
Bristol is one of those cities that rewards curiosity at every turn, from its industrial waterfront to its steep Georgian terraces covered in spray-painted art. Catching a Bristol bus with FlixBus puts you right in southwest England, where there are so many things to do in Bristol that a single visit rarely feels like enough. If you're into engineering history, independent culture, or simply wandering with no fixed plan, this city has a way of pulling you back.
Museums
Brunel's SS Great Britain is one of the most compelling industrial heritage sites in the country. Launched in 1843, this was the world's first ocean-going propeller-driven iron steamship, a genuinely revolutionary piece of engineering, and today it sits in the very dry dock where it was built in Bristol's Great Western Dockyard. You can walk through the restored ship, step below the waterline into the atmospheric "glass sea" exhibit, and get a real sense of what a 19th-century transatlantic crossing actually felt like.
Bristol Museum & Art Gallery sits in a grand Edwardian building on Queens Road and covers far more ground than its civic exterior might suggest. Inside you'll find Egyptian mummies, a strong collection of French and British paintings, natural history galleries, and one of Banksy's most famous early works, a cave painting of a man pushing a supermarket trolley, displayed with quiet pride. Entry is free, which makes it an easy addition to any day in the city.
We The Curious is a science centre on the Harbourside that earns its place on any itinerary, not just for families. It's built around hands-on exploration rather than passive display, with exhibits covering everything from the human brain to the physics of sound. The on-site planetarium runs regular shows that are worth booking ahead. It's the kind of place where you look up and realise two hours have disappeared.
Historic religious sites
Bristol Cathedral stands at the top of College Green and is one of England's finest examples of a hall church, meaning its nave, choir, and aisles all rise to the same height, creating an unusually spacious and light interior. Construction began in the 12th century, though the nave wasn't completed until the 1880s, giving the building a fascinating layering of periods and styles. The medieval choir stalls and the Berkeley Chapel are both worth slowing down for.
St Mary Redcliffe Church has been standing in some form since 1158, and Queen Elizabeth I reportedly called it "the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England." That's a bold claim, but the soaring Gothic spire and the intricate hexagonal north porch make it hard to argue. The church is open daily and free to enter, and it's the kind of place where the scale of the stonework genuinely stops you in your tracks.
Natural spaces
Bristol Harbourside (Floating Harbour) is the social and geographic centre of the city, a stretch of tidal-lock water lined with converted warehouses, independent restaurants, and cultural venues. The harbour was engineered in the early 19th century to keep ships afloat regardless of Bristol's dramatic tidal range. Today it's where the city comes to eat, drink, and watch the water, and it connects most of Bristol's major attractions within a short walk.
Brandon Hill & Cabot Tower offers the best free view in Bristol. The hill is one of the oldest public open spaces in the country, and the Victorian Gothic tower at its summit, built to commemorate explorer John Cabot's 1497 voyage to North America, rewards the climb with a panorama stretching across the rooftops to the Clifton hills. It's a ten-minute walk from the city centre and almost always quieter than you'd expect.
Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge at a height of around 75 metres, connecting Clifton to Leigh Woods. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864, it remains one of the most elegant pieces of Victorian engineering anywhere in Britain. Walking across it is free, and the views down into the gorge are genuinely dramatic. The small visitor centre on the Clifton side explains the bridge's long and complicated construction history.
St Nicholas Market is Bristol's oldest covered market, tucked into a handsome 18th-century arcade in the Old City. On any given weekday lunchtime, the surrounding streets fill with traders selling everything from Ethiopian street food to handmade jewellery. The Exchange Hall and the glass-roofed Covered Market are worth exploring even if you're not buying. The architecture alone is a reason to visit.
Banksy Street Art Trail (Stokes Croft / City Centre) gives you a reason to walk parts of Bristol you might otherwise skip. Bristol is widely considered the city where Banksy's career began, and while pieces appear and disappear over time, Stokes Croft and the surrounding streets reliably hold some of the most interesting public art in the UK, not just Banksy's work, but a dense concentration of murals from artists across the world. No app or tour guide is strictly necessary. Just walk north from the centre and keep looking up.
