Historic monuments

Gateway of India is the natural starting point for any visit to the city. Built in 1924 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, this 26-metre basalt arch stands at the waterfront in Apollo Bunder, looking out over Mumbai Harbour. It's the kind of landmark that earns its fame — the proportions are genuinely impressive up close, and the surrounding waterfront fills with locals and visitors at all hours. Early mornings, before the crowds build, are the best time to appreciate the stonework in peace.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) — formerly the Prince of Wales Museum — occupies a grand Indo-Saracenic building in the Fort district, just a short walk from the Gateway. The collection spans over 50,000 artefacts across art, archaeology and natural history, including Indus Valley seals, Mughal miniature paintings and a dedicated children's museum wing. The building itself, with its central dome and lush garden courtyard, is as much of a draw as anything inside. Budget at least two hours to do it justice.

Elephanta Caves sit on a small island about 10 km east of the Gateway of India, reached by a ferry that takes roughly an hour. The UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to between the 5th and 8th centuries and contains a series of rock-cut temples dedicated to Shiva, the most striking of which is the three-headed Trimurti sculpture standing over five metres tall. The island is car-free, and the short walk up through the market to the caves sets the mood well before you arrive.

Historic religious sites

Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and tomb built on a tiny islet in the Arabian Sea, connected to the Worli coastline by a narrow 500-metre causeway that floods at high tide. The white structure, visible from Marine Drive on clear days, is one of Mumbai's most recognisable silhouettes. Visitors of all faiths come here, and the atmosphere inside — incense, qawwali music drifting through the corridors, the sound of the sea on all sides — is unlike anywhere else in the city. Siddhivinayak Temple in Prabhadevi is one of the most visited Hindu temples in India, dedicated to Ganesha and drawing enormous crowds, particularly on Tuesdays. The main shrine houses a black stone idol of Ganesha with a trunk turned to the right, a rare form considered auspicious. The temple was originally built in 1801 and has been expanded significantly since. Arriving early on a weekday will mean shorter queues, though a busy day here is an experience in itself.

Natural spaces

Marine Drive is a 3.6-km arc of reclaimed land that curves along the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point to Malabar Hill. The promenade is best at dusk, when the street lamps light up in a chain that gives it the nickname "Queen's Necklace." It's a place where Mumbai genuinely relaxes — couples, families, office workers and street food vendors all share the same stretch of sea wall. Walking the full length takes about 45 minutes at a comfortable pace.

Juhu Beach stretches for several kilometres in the northern suburbs and operates as a neighbourhood park as much as a beach. The water isn't ideal for swimming, but that's not really the point. The action is on the sand, where vendors sell pav bhaji, bhel puri and corn on the cob from carts that line the shore every evening. It's a good place to understand how Mumbai actually unwinds.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park is an 87-square-kilometre protected forest sitting inside the city limits in Borivali, one of the largest urban national parks in the world. Leopards, deer and over 250 bird species live here alongside the ancient Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist rock-cut complex dating back to the 1st century BCE. Dense forest canopy just 40 minutes from South Mumbai by bus — the contrast is genuinely striking.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link is a cable-stayed bridge that spans 5.6 km across Mahim Bay, connecting the western suburbs to the island city. It's primarily a commuter route, but driving or riding across it — especially at night when the cables are lit up — gives you one of the best views of the Mumbai skyline available. Many visitors hire a cab specifically for the crossing.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) is a Victorian Gothic railway station built in 1887 and still one of the busiest in India, handling millions of commuters daily. The UNESCO-listed building is extraordinary: turrets, gargoyles, stained glass and a central dome that looks more like a cathedral than a transport hub. Stand on the footbridge opposite during the morning rush and watch the city move at full speed.
