Historic palaces and forts

Shaniwar Wada is the fortified palace that once served as the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. Built in 1732, the structure was largely destroyed by fire in 1828, but the towering stone bastions and ornate entrance gates that remain give you a vivid sense of the scale and ambition of Maratha power at its peak. Aga Khan Palace carries a quieter, more solemn kind of history. Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III, it later became the site where Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba, and his secretary Mahadev Desai were interned by the British during the Quit India Movement. The samadhi memorials to Kasturba and Desai stand in the garden, and the palace's wide verandas and peaceful grounds make it a place for genuine reflection rather than just sightseeing.

Sinhagad Fort sits roughly 30 kilometres southwest of the city centre, perched at around 1,300 metres on a dramatic escarpment. The fort is most famous as the site of the 1670 Battle of Sinhagad, where the Maratha commander Tanaji Malusare lost his life capturing it from the Mughals. The trek up is steep but manageable, and the views across the Deccan plateau at the top, along with a bowl of the local spiced chickpea snack, kande pohe, make the effort entirely worthwhile.

Lal Mahal is the red palace in the old city where the young Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj spent part of his childhood with his mother Jijabai. The current structure is a later reconstruction, but it serves as an important cultural landmark and houses exhibits relating to Shivaji's early life. Its location in the Kasba Peth neighbourhood puts you within easy walking distance of some of Pune's oldest lanes and local markets.

Religious sites

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganesh Temple is one of the most visited Ganesh temples in Maharashtra, located in the Budhwar Peth area of the city. The presiding deity, a Ganesh idol adorned with gold ornaments and a gold-plated crown, draws enormous crowds year-round, particularly during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Even outside festival season, the temple has a warm, devotional energy, and the surrounding street food stalls selling modak and chai are reason enough to linger.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple is an 8th-century rock-cut shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, carved directly into a single basalt rock during the Rashtrakuta period. Tucked behind a busy road in the Jangli Maharaj Road area, it feels remarkably calm once you step inside. The circular Nandi mandapa at the entrance is particularly striking, and the unfinished sections of the cave give you an unusually clear picture of how ancient craftsmen actually went about their work.

Cultural spaces

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum houses a personal collection of over 20,000 artefacts assembled by Dr. Dinkar Kelkar over several decades, all dedicated to the memory of his son Raja. Spread across three floors, the collection ranges from intricately carved nutcrackers and hookah pipes to armour, musical instruments, and a reconstructed section of the Mastani Mahal. It is one of those museums where the sheer obsessive breadth of one person's passion becomes the entire point.

Osho International Meditation Resort occupies a large, lushly landscaped campus in the Koregaon Park neighbourhood and operates as a centre for meditation, yoga, and various therapeutic programmes rooted in the teachings of Osho. The architecture is a striking mix of black marble, white pyramidal structures, and dense tropical greenery. Visitors can attend morning meditation sessions and evening events, and even if you come simply to walk through the gardens, the atmosphere is unlike anything else in the city.

Green spaces

Empress Garden is a 39-acre botanical garden established during the British colonial period, home to a wide variety of trees, flowering plants, and a small greenhouse. It is a favourite spot for morning walkers, families, and anyone who wants a quiet hour away from the city's traffic. The annual Pune Flower Show, held here each February, transforms the grounds into a colourful, fragrant display that draws visitors from across Maharashtra.

Parvati Hill & Parvati Temple rises about 2,100 steps above the surrounding city, though in practice the climb is far shorter and takes around 15 minutes. At the top sits a cluster of 18th-century temples dedicated to Parvati, Vishnu, and Kartikeya, along with a small museum of Peshwa-era artefacts. The panoramic view over Pune's rooftops, particularly at dusk, is one of the most satisfying you'll find anywhere in the city.
