A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, it's the best-preserved 17th-century royal palace in northern Europe, with formal Baroque gardens and an 18th-century court theatre that still stages opera performances. The boat ride out from the city adds to the sense of occasion, though you can also reach it by Stockholm bus connections.

Museums

Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) is built around a single extraordinary object: the Vasa, a 64-gun warship that sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm Harbour in 1628 and was salvaged 333 years later almost entirely intact. The ship is displayed across multiple levels so you can examine the carved figureheads, the gun decks, and the sheer scale of the hull from every angle. It's one of the most visited museums in Scandinavia, and the detail preserved in the wood after centuries underwater is remarkable.

Skansen Open-Air Museum spreads across a hillside on Djurgården island and brings together more than 150 historical buildings relocated from across Sweden, including farmsteads, manor houses, a glassblowing workshop, and a bakery. It functions as a living museum, with staff in period dress demonstrating traditional crafts throughout the year. In winter it becomes one of Stockholm's most atmospheric Christmas markets.

ABBA The Museum is an interactive exhibition dedicated to Sweden's most famous pop export, located on Djurgården. It goes well beyond a standard display of memorabilia. You can step into a replica of the studio where the band recorded, try on costumes, and add your own vocals to ABBA tracks. Lifelong fans and the merely curious tend to get equal enjoyment out of it. A genuinely entertaining couple of hours.

Art and photography

Fotografiska (Museum of Photography) occupies a converted early 20th-century customs building on the Södermalm waterfront and hosts rotating exhibitions from some of the world's most respected photographers. The programming shifts regularly, so there's almost always something new on show. The top-floor restaurant has a view over the water that makes it worth visiting even if you're not staying for the full exhibition.

Urban landmarks

Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) is the building where the Nobel Prize banquet is held each December. A guided tour takes you through the Blue Hall, the grand banquet room that is actually red brick, and the Golden Hall, whose walls are covered in more than 18 million mosaic tiles. The tower is open in summer and gives one of the best elevated views over the city and Lake Mälaren.

Parks and waterfront

Tantolunden Park is a large green space in the Södermalm district, popular with locals for picnics, outdoor swimming, and summer concerts. The park slopes down toward the water and includes one of Stockholm's allotment garden areas, where small wooden cottages sit among vegetable plots. An unexpectedly charming detail in the middle of the city.

Liljeholmsbron & Hornstull Waterfront runs along the southern edge of Södermalm, just a short walk from the Liljeholmen Stockholm bus stop. The stretch between the bridge and Hornstull is lined with houseboats, weekend markets, and waterside cafés. It's one of the more relaxed parts of the city to spend an afternoon without any particular agenda.
