Stockholm

Stockholm earns its reputation honestly. Museums

Vasa Museum is one of the most singular museum experiences in Europe. The centrepiece is the warship Vasa, a 17th-century Swedish man-of-war that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged from Stockholm's harbour in 1961, remarkably intact after more than three centuries underwater. The museum, which opened in 1990, is built around the ship itself, so you walk in and find this enormous, ornately carved vessel looming above you. The carvings alone, loaded with political symbolism, could occupy you for an hour.

ABBA The Museum does exactly what it promises, and it does it with genuine flair. Dedicated to Sweden's most globally recognised pop export, the museum on Djurgården blends interactive exhibits, original costumes, and recording memorabilia into something that works for visitors who grew up with the music and those who discovered it later. The highlight for many is the hologram stage, where you can virtually perform alongside the four members themselves. Unexpectedly moving, even if you arrive a sceptic.

Fotografiska has established itself as one of the most respected photography institutions in the world since opening in 2010. Housed in a converted Art Nouveau customs building on the Södermalm waterfront, it runs four or five major exhibitions at any one time, mixing established names with emerging photographers. The building's top-floor restaurant is worth the visit on its own, with panoramic views across the water toward Gamla Stan.

Nationalmuseum is Sweden's largest art and design museum, with a collection of around 700,000 objects spanning painting, sculpture, applied arts and design from the Renaissance to the present day. The building itself, a grand 19th-century structure on the Blasieholmen peninsula, reopened after a major five-year renovation in 2018, and the interior now lets the collection breathe in a way it couldn't before. The Swedish design holdings, covering furniture, glass and textiles, are particularly strong.

Historic sites

Gamla Stan, Stockholm's old town, is the medieval core of the city, occupying its own small island between the modern centre and Södermalm. The street grid here dates back to the 13th century, and wandering through it, past narrow alleyways, ochre-coloured buildings and small independent shops, gives you a real sense of the city's age. Stortorget, the main square, is one of the oldest squares in Stockholm and the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, a piece of history that still gives the cobblestones a certain weight.

Royal Palace sits at the northern edge of Gamla Stan and is one of the largest palaces in the world still used as an official royal residence. With over 600 rooms, it houses several distinct museums within its walls, including the Treasury, where the Swedish crown jewels are kept. The daily changing of the guard in the outer courtyard draws a crowd, but the interior apartments, decorated across several centuries of Swedish royal taste, are the real draw.

Iconic building

Stockholm City Hall stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, its distinctive red-brick tower a landmark visible from much of the waterfront. Completed in 1923, it's best known internationally as the venue for the Nobel Prize banquet, held each December in the Blue Hall, which, despite its name, is not blue. Guided tours take you through the banquet rooms and up the tower, and the view from the top across Lake Mälaren and the old town is one of the best in the city.

Zoo and open-air museum

Skansen Open-Air Museum, also on Djurgården, is the oldest open-air museum in the world, founded in 1891. It combines a traditional zoo of Nordic animals, including brown bears, wolves and moose, with more than 150 historic buildings relocated from across Sweden, staffed by people in period dress demonstrating traditional crafts. It covers a large hillside site, so give yourself at least half a day.

Parks

Haga Park sits just north of the city centre and stretches along the western shore of Brunnsviken lake. It was laid out as a royal park in the 18th century and still has a pleasantly unhurried atmosphere, with walking paths, the Chinese Pavilion, and the copper tents that once housed Gustav III's guards. It's a good place to decompress after a few days of sightseeing.

Vasaparken is a neighbourhood park in the Vasastan district, close to St Eriksplan itself. It's a straightforward, well-used green space, a football pitch, benches, mature trees, and a good spot to get a feel for everyday Stockholm life away from the main tourist circuit. The Saturday market nearby makes it worth timing a visit for the weekend.
