Chennai

Chennai is one of South India's most rewarding cities to explore. Seventh-century temple gopurams rise beside colonial-era forts, and the world's longest urban beach stretches along the Bay of Bengal. Getting there by FlixBus is straightforward, dropping you right into a city packed with things to do, from ancient rock-cut monuments to living cultural traditions. History, nature, art — there's more than enough to fill your days.

Historic religious sites

Kapaleeshwarar Temple is the spiritual heart of the Mylapore neighbourhood and one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is crowned by a towering, intricately carved gopuram painted in vivid colours. Arrive early in the morning when the air is thick with incense and the sound of temple bells, and take your time walking the inner corridors lined with smaller shrines. The tank beside the main structure reflects the gopuram at golden hour in a way that stays with you long after you leave.

Santhome Cathedral Basilica stands on the Marina seafront and is one of only three basilicas in the world built over the tomb of an apostle — in this case, St. Thomas, who is said to have brought Christianity to India in 52 AD. The current neo-Gothic structure dates from the late 19th century, all whitewashed walls and pointed arches, with a small museum in the crypt below. Even if you're not religious, the quiet interior and the story embedded in the stone make this a genuinely moving stop on any Chennai itinerary.

Historic sites

Fort St. George was built by the British East India Company in 1644, making it the first English fortress in India, and it still functions as the seat of the Tamil Nadu state legislature today. Inside the fort walls you'll find the Fort Museum, which holds a well-curated collection of colonial-era artefacts, weapons, coins, and portraits tracing the city's growth from a trading post into a metropolis. The sheer scale of the compound, and the fact that it remains a working government site, gives the visit an unusual, layered quality you won't find in a conventional museum.

Valluvar Kottam is a monument dedicated to the ancient Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar, best known for writing the Thirukkural, a classical text of ethics and governance that remains widely read today. The centrepiece is a massive stone chariot modelled on the temple cars of Tamil Nadu, and the complex also features an auditorium and panels inscribed with all 1,330 couplets of the Thirukkural. It's a quieter site than the city's more famous landmarks, which means you can take your time reading the verses and understanding why this poet holds such an enduring place in Tamil culture.

Mahabalipuram (Group of Monuments) sits about 60 km south of Chennai along the Coromandel Coast, making it an easy and very worthwhile day trip. Carved by the Pallava kings in the 7th and 8th centuries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site includes rock-cut cave temples, the Shore Temple perched right on the beach, and the enormous bas-relief known as Arjuna's Penance — one of the largest open-air rock carvings in the world. The scale and detail of the stonework, set against the sound of the ocean, is extraordinary.

Cultural centres

Birla Planetarium Chennai offers a well-presented introduction to astronomy through regular sky shows projected onto its dome ceiling, alongside exhibits on space exploration and the solar system. It's a good stop if you're travelling with curious minds of any age, and the shows are narrated clearly enough to be engaging even without a science background. The building itself, with its distinctive dome, is a recognisable landmark in the Kotturpuram area.

DakshinaChitra is a living heritage museum on the East Coast Road that recreates traditional homes and crafts from across South India — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Artisans work on-site demonstrating weaving, pottery, and other crafts, and the reconstructed houses give you a tangible sense of regional architectural differences that are easy to miss when moving through modern cities. Set aside at least two hours; there's more to absorb than the compact site initially suggests.

Cultural museum

Government Museum Chennai (Egmore Museum) was founded in 1851, making it the second-oldest museum in India, and its collection is remarkable in scope. The highlight for most visitors is the bronze gallery, which houses an exceptional array of Chola-period bronze sculptures, including several iconic Nataraja figures. The Amaravati gallery, displaying 2,000-year-old Buddhist marble sculptures, is equally impressive and often less crowded. The campus spreads across several buildings, so pick up a map at the entrance and plan your route before you start.

Natural spaces

Marina Beach runs for roughly 13 kilometres along Chennai's eastern edge, making it one of the longest urban beaches in the world. It's less a place for swimming (the currents are strong) and more a place for watching Chennai life unfold: vendors selling sundal and murukku, families out for evening walks, kite flyers competing for sky space at dusk. Come in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, and walk south toward the lighthouse for a quieter stretch of sand.

Guindy National Park & Snake Park is a rare thing: a protected forest reserve sitting inside a major city, covering around 270 hectares in the south of Chennai. The national park is home to blackbuck, spotted deer, and a variety of bird species, while the adjacent Snake Park houses an impressive collection of Indian reptiles, including several cobra and python species. It's a good half-day outing and a genuine change of pace from the city's temples and museums.
