Historic palaces

Bangalore Palace was built in 1887 and modelled, somewhat ambitiously, on Windsor Castle. The Tudor-style turrets and battlements look almost surreal set against the Bengaluru skyline, but step inside and the rooms are genuinely fascinating, filled with original furniture, hunting trophies, royal photographs, and hand-painted walls that tell you a great deal about the lifestyle of the Wadiyar dynasty. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace is a more intimate building than its name might suggest, a two-storey teak structure built in the late 18th century that served as the seasonal retreat of the ruler of Mysore. The carved wooden pillars and painted arches are in remarkable condition, and the small museum inside provides useful context about Tipu Sultan's campaigns and his complicated legacy in the region. The palace sits in the older part of the city, making it easy to combine with a visit to nearby Bangalore Fort.

Bangalore Fort survives only in fragments today. Most of it was dismantled during the British period, but what remains, including the Delhi Gate, still carries real historical weight. Originally built in mud in the 16th century and later reinforced in stone, the fort was the seed from which the modern city grew. Walking around the ruins with that in mind gives the site a significance that goes well beyond what you can see.

Vidhana Soudha is the seat of Karnataka's state legislature and one of the most striking pieces of civic architecture in South India. Built in the 1950s in a style that blends neo-Dravidian and Indo-Saracenic elements, the granite building is enormous, deliberately so, as it was designed to project the ambitions of a newly independent nation. You can't enter without a permit, but the exterior is best seen at night when the whole structure is lit up, particularly on Sundays and public holidays.

ISKCON Temple (Sri Radha Krishna Temple) is one of the largest ISKCON temples in the world and draws visitors regardless of their religious background. The complex combines traditional South Indian temple architecture with modern construction and sits on a hill in north Bengaluru. Inside, the shrines are elaborately decorated, the prasadam restaurant serves a reliable vegetarian meal, and the atmosphere during evening aarti, with music, incense, and hundreds of devotees, is genuinely moving.

National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) Bengaluru occupies a beautifully restored colonial building and holds a strong permanent collection of Indian modern art spanning the 19th century to the present day. Works by Raja Ravi Varma sit alongside pieces from the Bengal School and post-independence artists, giving you a coherent arc through the development of Indian visual art. The temporary exhibitions are consistently well-curated and the building itself, with its high ceilings and wooden floors, is a pleasure to spend time in.

Bannerghatta National Park lies about 25 kilometres south of the city and packs in more wildlife than most visitors expect. The park's biological reserve is home to Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and a wide variety of birds, and the guided safari takes you through dry deciduous forest on a route designed to maximise sightings. There's also a butterfly enclosure and a rescue centre for injured animals. It makes for a full day out and a very different side of Bengaluru.
