It is the largest living history park in Canada.

Art Gallery of Alberta occupies a striking stainless-steel building in downtown Edmonton, designed by Randall Stout and intended to echo the movement of the Northern Lights. Inside, the permanent collection focuses on Albertan and Canadian art, while the temporary exhibition programme brings in significant international shows throughout the year. The building's spiralling interior atrium is worth pausing in even before you reach the galleries.

West Edmonton Mall is, at 5.3 million square feet, the largest shopping mall in Canada and the second largest in North America. Beyond the 800-plus stores, it contains an indoor water park, an ice rink, a full amusement park, a sea life attraction, and two hotels. That makes it less a shopping centre and more a self-contained destination. Allocate more time than you think you need.

Historic sites

Alberta Legislature Building stands on the site of Fort Edmonton, overlooking the river valley from a broad formal terrace. Completed in 1912, the Beaux-Arts sandstone building is still the seat of Alberta's provincial government, and free guided tours take you through the ornate interior, including the legislative chamber itself. The surrounding grounds are well maintained and make for a calm, unhurried walk, particularly in the warmer months when the fountain pools are running.

High Level Bridge crosses the North Saskatchewan River at one of its most dramatic points, connecting the university neighbourhood to the downtown core. Built in 1913, it carries both vehicle traffic and a seasonal streetcar that runs across the span in summer — one of the more unusual ways to get a view of the valley. Standing on the pedestrian walkway and looking east or west along the river gives you a clear sense of just how deep and wide the valley actually is.
