Golden Sands

Golden Sands is a compact Black Sea resort town in northeastern Bulgaria where pine-covered hills meet a long stretch of warm, shallow water, and getting here by FlixBus is straightforward, with regular connections from Sofia, Varna, and beyond. Natural spaces

Golden Sands Beach (Zlatni Pyasatsi Central Beach) is the heart of the resort and the reason most people make the trip. The beach stretches for roughly eight kilometres, with fine golden sand that gives the town its name, calm water that stays shallow for a good distance, and a line of sunbeds and beach bars if you want them. It gets busy in July and August, but the northern end tends to be quieter, and the water quality here is consistently good.

Golden Sands Nature Park (Zlatni Pyasatsi Nature Park) sits directly behind the resort and offers a complete change of pace. The park covers around 13 square kilometres of coastal forest — mostly oak and hornbeam — and is laced with walking trails that take you from the beach promenade into genuine woodland within minutes. It's one of the few places on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where you can spot woodpeckers, deer, and wild tortoises without travelling far from your hotel.

Saints Constantine and Helena Resort lies a few kilometres south of Golden Sands and is worth a short trip for its calmer, more sheltered waterfront. The bay here is narrow and tree-lined, the pace is slower, and the mix of older sanatoriums and newer boutique hotels gives it a slightly different character from its louder neighbour. A good option for a quieter afternoon by the water.

Sea Garden (Morska Gradina), Varna is the large coastal park that runs along Varna's seafront and connects the city centre to the beach. Laid out in the late 19th century, it contains fountains, open-air stages, a naval museum, and plenty of shaded benches. An evening stroll here, when locals are out in force and the light over the Black Sea turns amber, is one of the better free experiences in the region.

Historic sites

Aladzha Monastery is a medieval Orthodox cave complex carved into a 25-metre-high karst cliff on the Franga Plateau, about three kilometres west of the beach. Hermit monks inhabited these rock-hewn cells and chapels during the 13th and 14th centuries, and faint traces of original frescoes are still visible on the walls. A separate set of catacombs sits in the surrounding forest. The whole site is shaded and cool, making it a welcome escape on a hot afternoon.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, Varna is the largest cathedral in Bulgaria and one of the most striking buildings in the region. Built in the early 20th century and modelled loosely on the Hagia Sophia, it dominates the central square in Varna with its golden domes and pale stone facade. Step inside for the elaborate iconostasis and the sense of scale. The interior holds several thousand people and the acoustics are remarkable.

Roman Thermae (Ancient Roman Baths), Varna are the largest Roman bath complex in Bulgaria and among the biggest in Europe. Built in the late 2nd century AD when the city was known as Odessos, the towering brick ruins still stand several storeys high in Varna's old quarter. You can walk through the remains of the frigidarium, caldarium, and service corridors, and the site is well-labelled enough to make sense of the layout without a guide.

Entertainment

Aquapolis Water Park is the main family attraction in Golden Sands itself, with a solid range of slides, wave pools, and dedicated zones for younger children. It's well-maintained and large enough that queues move reasonably fast even on peak summer days. The park is within easy walking distance of the central beach, so you can combine both in a single day without any hassle.

Varna Dolphinarium sits within the Sea Garden park and puts on daily shows featuring Black Sea bottlenose dolphins. It's one of the oldest dolphinariums in Eastern Europe, and the shows are short and well-paced. If you're travelling with children, pairing this with a walk through the Sea Garden and a stop at the nearby Naval Museum makes for a full morning.

Cultural stop

Varna Archaeological Museum holds one of the most important prehistoric collections in the world, including finds from the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis, a burial site dating to around 4500 BC that produced the oldest processed gold artefacts ever discovered. The museum building itself is a handsome 19th-century structure, and the exhibits are clearly presented. Even if ancient history isn't usually your thing, the gold collection is genuinely arresting.
