St. George Rotunda is the oldest preserved building in Sofia, a compact red-brick church built in the early 4th century CE during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great. It sits tucked inside the courtyard of the Presidency building, surrounded by the remains of ancient Serdica. Step inside to see layers of medieval frescoes uncovered during restoration, each century painted over the last, now carefully peeled back to reveal them all at once.

Boyana Church sits at the foot of Vitosha Mountain on Sofia's southern edge and holds a UNESCO World Heritage designation. The frescoes painted here in 1259 are considered a landmark of medieval European art: realistic, expressive portraits of saints and donors that predate the Italian Renaissance by a full century. Visitor numbers are strictly limited to protect the paintings, so booking ahead is essential.

Banya Bashi Mosque is the only functioning mosque in Sofia and one of the few surviving Ottoman-era buildings in the city centre. Built in the 16th century, it sits directly above natural hot springs (the name translates roughly as "many baths mosque"), and the warm mineral water still bubbles up nearby. Sofia was once Serdica, a prosperous Roman city that Emperor Constantine reportedly considered making his capital, and the excavated streets, towers, and basilica foundations give that claim real weight. Natural spaces

Vitosha Mountain & Vitosha Nature Park rises directly behind the city and shapes daily life in Sofia in a way few urban mountains do. Residents head up for weekend hikes, and the trails are accessible by public transport from the centre in under an hour. The Cherni Vrah peak reaches just over 2,290 metres, offering wide views across the city and the plains beyond. In winter, there's a small ski area that locals use without much fuss.

Borisova Gradina (Boris's Garden) is Sofia's oldest and most-loved public park, a sprawling green space with rose gardens, a velodrome, fountains, and tree-lined paths that fill up on warm evenings. It's the kind of place where you get a real sense of how Sofia residents actually spend their time: walking dogs, playing chess, or simply sitting on a bench with coffee.

Culture

Ivan Vazov National Theatre is Bulgaria's oldest and most prestigious theatre, a handsome Neo-Baroque building set in its own small garden near the city centre. Named after Bulgaria's most celebrated writer, it stages drama, opera, and ballet to a high standard, and the colonnaded facade and ornate interior are worth seeing even if you don't catch a performance.

National Historical Museum is the largest museum in Bulgaria, housed in a former government residence on the slopes of Vitosha. Its collection spans Thracian gold treasures, medieval manuscripts, and Ottoman-era artefacts, covering several thousand years of Bulgarian history under one roof. Set aside at least two hours, and consider combining the visit with a walk up into the nature park just above.

National Palace of Culture (NDK) is a monumental congress and cultural centre built in 1981 that anchors the southern end of the city centre. It hosts concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, and festivals throughout the year, and the wide plaza in front of it is one of Sofia's main gathering points. Whatever you think of the architecture, the scale is hard to ignore.
