Varna

Varna is Bulgaria's premier Black Sea city, where Roman ruins sit a short walk from sandy beaches and a forested coastal park stretches for kilometres along the waterfront. Museums

Varna Archaeological Museum is one of the most important archaeology museums in southeastern Europe, and its star exhibit makes it unmissable: the Varna Gold Treasure, a collection of burial gold objects dating back to around 4600–4200 BC, considered the oldest processed gold in the world. The displays walk you through Thracian, Greek, and Roman civilisations that all left their mark on this stretch of the Black Sea coast. Set aside at least two hours to do it justice.

Naval Museum Varna tells the story of Bulgaria's relationship with the Black Sea through a mix of indoor exhibits and an open-air display of real vessels and artillery. The outdoor section is particularly engaging. You can walk around torpedo boats, anchors, and naval guns spanning more than a century of maritime history. It's a short stroll from the city centre and well worth an afternoon visit.

Historic and religious sites

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is Varna's most recognisable landmark, a late 19th-century Orthodox cathedral whose gold-capped domes are visible from much of the city centre. Step inside and the scale becomes even more impressive, with elaborate frescoes and gilded iconostases covering the interior. It remains an active place of worship, so dress modestly and visit outside of service times for the most relaxed experience.

Aladzha Monastery (Rock Monastery) is a medieval Orthodox monastery carved directly into a chalk cliff face, located in the forest north of the city. The complex dates back to the 12th or 13th century and was inhabited by monks who lived in caves and chambers cut into the rock. Even without its original frescoes, the site is atmospheric and unusual. The surrounding forest and the sheer strangeness of the carved-out spaces make it genuinely memorable.

Roman Thermae (Ancient Baths) are among the largest Roman bath complexes ever uncovered in Bulgaria, dating from the 2nd to 3rd century AD. The ruins sit right in the city centre, which makes the contrast between ancient brick arches and modern Varna all the more striking. Interpretive panels help you piece together how the baths would have functioned, and the sheer scale of the remaining walls gives a real sense of how significant Roman Odessos once was.

Natural spaces

Sea Garden (Primorski Park) is a long, landscaped park running along the Black Sea coast, connecting the city centre to the beach. It's the kind of place where you can spend a whole morning without a plan. Shaded paths, open lawns, a small zoo, fountains, and sea views at regular intervals. The park also provides easy walking access to several other attractions, making it a natural hub for exploring the Varna waterfront on foot.

Varna Beach (Central Beach) is a wide, well-maintained stretch of sand at the foot of the Sea Garden. The water is calm by European beach standards, the facilities are solid, and in summer the beach fills up with a lively but manageable crowd. As urban beaches go, it's genuinely pleasant: clean, accessible, and with plenty of cafés and beach bars nearby.

Pobiti Kamani (Stone Forest) is a natural phenomenon about 18–20 km west of Varna that looks like nothing else in Bulgaria. Across roughly 7 square kilometres, clusters of hollow stone columns, some reaching up to 9 metres tall, rise from a sandy, desert-like plain. The formations are the result of ancient geological processes involving methane-bearing fluids, and the main group alone contains over 350 individual stones. It's a short trip from the city and completely unlike anything you'd expect to find on the Black Sea coast.

Euxinograd Palace & Winery is a late 19th-century former royal summer residence on the Black Sea coast, 8 kilometres north of downtown Varna. The grounds include formal French-style gardens, a small beach, and a working winery producing wines under the Euxinograd label. You can join a tour covering both the architecture and a tasting. Royal history, a coastal setting, and drinkable wine make it one of the more enjoyable half-day trips from the city.

Varna Dolphinarium is one of the oldest dolphinariums in Europe and sits within the Sea Garden park. Shows feature Black Sea bottlenose dolphins and are popular with families, though the site also runs educational programmes about marine life in the region. It's a compact attraction that works well as part of a broader day in the park.
