Queen Elizabeth Park occupies the highest point in Vancouver, and on a clear day the panoramic view of the downtown skyline backed by the North Shore mountains is genuinely hard to beat. The park was built on the site of two former stone quarries, which have been transformed into sunken gardens filled with flowering plants and ornamental trees. It's a quieter alternative to Stanley Park, popular with locals for weekend picnics and wedding photos.

Viewpoints

Grouse Mountain looms over North Vancouver and rewards the trip up — by gondola or the punishing Grouse Grind trail — with sweeping views across the Lower Mainland all the way to Vancouver Island on clear days. At the summit you'll find a working wind turbine, a wildlife refuge for rescued grizzly bears, and in winter, a small ski area that locals use on weekday evenings after work. VanDusen Botanical Garden packs over 7,500 plant species and varieties from six continents into 55 acres in the middle of the city. The Elizabethan hedge maze is a favourite with families, but the real draw is how thoughtfully the garden is laid out. Themed sections move you from a Chilean garden to a Canadian Heritage Rose collection without it ever feeling like a theme park. Visit in late spring when the rhododendrons are in bloom and the whole place turns pink and purple.

Markets

Granville Island Public Market is the kind of place where you arrive intending to pick up lunch and leave two hours later with smoked salmon, a jar of local honey, and a bunch of dahlias. The covered market sits on a small peninsula under the Granville Bridge and is packed with independent vendors selling fresh produce, charcuterie, baked goods, and prepared food from around the world. Grab a coffee and a pastry and eat outside on the waterfront. The view of False Creek from the dock is excellent.

Historic district

Gastown Historic District is Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood, centred on Water Street and named after a saloon keeper called "Gassy Jack" Deighton who set up shop here in 1867. The cobblestone streets and Victorian brick buildings now house independent restaurants, design studios, and boutiques, but the neighbourhood retains a genuine sense of history. The steam clock at the corner of Water and Cambie Street is a well-known landmark. It runs on a geothermal steam system and whistles on the quarter hour.

Iconic buildings

Canada Place juts into Burrard Inlet on a pier, its roof designed to look like a series of white sails. It serves as Vancouver's cruise ship terminal and convention centre, but it's worth visiting even if you're not boarding a ship. The outdoor promenade wraps around the building and gives you unobstructed views of the North Shore mountains, the harbour, and the floatplane terminal — one of the most cinematic vantage points in the city.

Cultural museums

Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at the University of British Columbia holds nearly 50,000 objects, with particular depth in Northwest Coast First Nations art — over 7,000 pieces from that region alone. The building, designed by Arthur Erickson in 1976, is as impressive as the collection: a soaring Great Hall of glass and concrete built to house monumental totem poles and carved house posts. The Multiversity Galleries allow you to browse thousands of objects from cultures around the world in open storage cases, a format that makes the scale of the collection tangible.

Beaches

English Bay Beach is Vancouver's most central stretch of sand, a west-facing crescent that draws crowds every summer evening for the sunset. The beach sits at the foot of the West End neighbourhood, so you're never far from a coffee shop or a restaurant on Denman Street. Every summer, the Celebration of Light fireworks competition is launched from a barge just offshore, and the entire beach fills up hours in advance.
