Zemun

Built in 1896 to mark a thousand years of Hungarian settlement in the Pannonian Plain, it is the only one of four such millennium towers still standing outside modern Hungary. Church of St. Nicholas (Nikolajevska Church) is the oldest Serbian Orthodox church in Zemun and a quiet anchor in the older part of town. Its modest exterior gives way to a richly decorated interior, and the churchyard contains some of the oldest grave markers in the municipality. Franciscan Monastery (Franjevački Samostan) represents the Catholic strand of Zemun's multi-faith past. The monastery complex has been a presence in the town since the 18th century, and its church retains a calm, austere interior that contrasts nicely with the more ornate Orthodox churches nearby. The building sits close to the quay, making it easy to include on a riverside walk.

Church of Our Lady (Crkva Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije) is another Catholic landmark that speaks to Zemun's Central European heritage. The church has a graceful tower visible from the lower town and an interior that rewards a short visit. Waterfront and parks

Zemun Quay (Zemunski Kej) runs along the Danube and is where locals come to eat, drink, and watch the river traffic. The quay is lined with fish restaurants serving freshwater specialities. The catfish and carp dishes here are the real thing, not tourist approximations. On weekend evenings the whole stretch fills with people, and the light on the water at dusk is particularly good.

Zemun Town Park (Gradski Park) offers a shaded retreat a short walk from the main sights. The park is a well-kept green space with mature trees and benches, popular with families and older residents in the afternoons. It's a useful place to pause between the quay and the hill, and its relaxed atmosphere gives you a genuine sense of everyday life in the neighbourhood.

Squares and plazas

Magistrate's Square (Magistratski Trg) is the civic centrepiece of Zemun, framed by the old town hall and several handsome 19th-century buildings. The square has a human scale that makes it pleasant to sit in rather than just pass through, and the architecture around it tells the story of a prosperous Austro-Hungarian market town more clearly than any museum exhibit could.

Cultural centres

Karamata Family House is one of the rare surviving 18th-century urban residences in Zemun's historic core, located at 17 Karamatina Street. The three-part Baroque building reflects the period of Habsburg influence and is listed as a cultural monument of great importance to Belgrade. A unified façade connects three distinct sections, making it a fascinating stop for anyone interested in how wealthy merchant families actually lived in this part of Europe.
