Niš

Niš is one of Serbia's oldest cities. Roman emperors were born here, the Ottomans left a deep mark, and today it runs on the energy of a busy university town. Historic monuments

Skull Tower is unlike anything else you'll encounter on a city walk. Built in 1809 by Ottoman forces after the Battle of Čegar, the tower originally held 952 Serbian rebel skulls embedded across its four sides as a warning to the local population. Today 58 skulls remain in the walls, and the skull said to belong to rebel commander Stevan Sinđelić is preserved in a glass case beside the structure. Sobering, unforgettable, and one of the most historically charged sites in the country.

Čegar Hill Monument stands on the very battlefield where those events unfolded. The memorial marks the spot where Sinđelić reportedly detonated a powder magazine to prevent capture during the First Serbian Uprising. The hilltop setting offers a quiet, open-air perspective on that moment in Serbian history, and the views across the surrounding landscape make the short trip out of the city centre worth it.

Historic sites

Niš Fortress sits at the centre of the city, straddling the Nišava River, and it's the kind of place you can wander through without a plan. Built largely by the Ottomans in the 18th century on foundations that go back much further, the walls enclose a relaxed park where locals stroll in the evenings. Look out for the well-preserved gates and the remains of a Turkish bath inside the complex. The layers of history here are genuinely tangible.

Tinkers' Alley (Kazandžijsko sokače) is a short cobbled lane that has been the city's craft and trade quarter since Ottoman times. Coppersmiths and silversmiths once dominated every doorway; today you'll find a mix of traditional workshops, small restaurants, and café terraces. It's the most atmospheric street in Niš for an afternoon coffee or an early evening drink, and a good place to pick up handmade copper souvenirs directly from the craftspeople who make them.

Mediana Archaeological Site lies about four kilometres east of the city centre and reveals a remarkably well-preserved Roman imperial estate. Built during the reign of Constantine the Great in the 3rd and 4th centuries, the complex includes the remains of a peristyle villa, thermae, a granary, and a water tower. Constantine himself was born in Naissus, the Roman name for Niš, which gives Mediana a direct personal connection to one of the ancient world's most consequential rulers.

Museums

Red Cross Concentration Camp is one of the best-preserved Nazi concentration camps in the Balkans, operating from 1941 to 1944 in a former military barracks on the edge of Niš. The site documents the imprisonment and execution of thousands of Jews, Roma, and Serbian resistance fighters, and includes a permanent exhibition with personal testimonies and artefacts. A visit here is difficult but important, and the on-site memorial is handled with real care and respect.

National Museum of Niš covers the city's long history across several floors, from prehistoric settlements through Roman Naissus to the medieval and Ottoman periods. The Roman collection is particularly strong, with mosaics, coins, and sculpture recovered from local excavations. It's a compact, well-organised museum that gives you solid context before you head out to explore the city's outdoor sites.

Bubanj Memorial Park honours the thousands of civilians executed by Nazi occupiers at this site on the outskirts of Niš during World War II. Three large bronze fists rising from the ground form the central monument, a striking and deliberately confrontational piece of Yugoslav-era sculpture. The surrounding parkland is peaceful, and the combination of natural setting and stark memorial makes for a genuinely moving visit.

Natural spaces

Niška Banja is a spa town a few kilometres from the city, built around thermal springs with water temperatures reaching around 36°C. It has been a place of rest and recovery since Roman times, and today you can use the thermal pools at several hotels and wellness centres without staying overnight. The forested hills around the town are also good for easy hiking if you want to balance a soak with some fresh air.

Sićevo Gorge cuts through the limestone hills east of Niš, carved by the Nišava River over millennia. The gorge is home to rare plant species, nesting birds of prey, and a narrow road that winds along the riverbank through dramatic rock faces. It's a straightforward day trip from the city, either by car or local bus, and one of the most visually striking landscapes in this part of Serbia.
