Allow at least a couple of hours to explore the layered fortifications properly.

Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás de Bari sits at the heart of the old town and rewards a quiet visit inside. Built in the 17th century on the site of a former mosque, it follows a restrained Herreran style that gives the interior an unusual calm and grandeur. The blue-domed chapel of Communion is the architectural highlight, with proportions and light that feel almost out of place in such a modest-sized city.

Barrio de Santa Cruz is the oldest neighbourhood in Alicante, climbing the slopes of Mount Benacantil just below the castle. The narrow lanes are lined with whitewashed houses decorated with ceramic pots and flowering plants, and the whole area has a genuinely residential feel rather than a tourist-facing one. Wander up through the stepped streets in the early evening, when the light is warm and the neighbourhood comes alive with locals heading out for the night.

Lucentum Archaeological Site (Tossal de Manises) sits on a low hill just three kilometres from the city centre, near the beach of Albufereta. This is the site of Roman Lucentum, the ancient predecessor of modern Alicante, developed from an earlier Iberian settlement. Walking the exposed ruins (forum, baths, defensive walls) gives a clear sense of the city's layout, and the hilltop position explains exactly why the Romans chose it. It's one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Valencian Community.

Museums and galleries

MARQ – Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante is one of the best regional archaeology museums in Spain, and a visit here before heading to Lucentum makes the ruins considerably more meaningful. The permanent collection spans prehistoric, Iberian, Roman, and medieval periods, with well-designed displays that use lighting and staging to dramatic effect. The museum has won the European Museum of the Year Award, which gives you a sense of the standard on offer.

MACA – Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante occupies a handsome 17th-century building in the old town and houses a collection that includes works by Picasso, Miró, and Dalí alongside lesser-known Spanish modernists. Entry is free, which makes it an easy addition to any afternoon in the city centre. The building itself, the oldest civil structure in Alicante, is worth a look even before you step inside.

Beaches

Playa del Postiguet is the city beach, tucked right below the castle and within easy walking distance of the old town. It's a fine-sand urban beach with calm, clear water, and its central location means you can combine a swim with a morning of sightseeing without needing any transport. It gets busy in summer, but the early mornings are peaceful and the backdrop of the castle above the shoreline is hard to beat.

Playa de San Juan stretches for several kilometres north of the city and is the go-to choice when you want more space. The sand is wide and well-maintained, the water is shallow for a long way out, and the beach is served by tram from the city centre. It's popular with locals rather than just visitors, and the string of beach bars along the promenade makes it a good spot for a long, unhurried afternoon.

Urban life

Explanada de España is Alicante's main promenade, running along the waterfront between the port and the old town. The pavement is laid in a wave pattern using more than six million marble tiles in red, black, and cream, a detail that sounds minor until you see it in person. It's the natural place to take an evening stroll, with palm trees overhead and the harbour on one side, and it connects most of the city's central points of interest on foot.

Mercado Central de Alicante is a covered market in the city centre where local traders sell fresh produce, fish, meat, and regional specialities. The building dates from the early 20th century and has a lively, practical atmosphere that reflects everyday life in the city rather than a curated food-hall experience.
