Black Church (Biserica Neagră) is the largest Gothic church in Romania and the undisputed centrepiece of Brașov's skyline. Construction began in 1385 and stretched nearly a century, leaving behind a structure 90 metres long and capable of holding up to 5,000 people. Inside, the walls are lined with the largest collection of Anatolian "Transylvanian rugs" in the world, donated by Saxon merchants over the centuries, giving the dark stone interior an unexpectedly warm, textile-rich atmosphere.

St. Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfântul Nicolae) sits in the Șchei neighbourhood, just outside the old Saxon city walls, and tells a different side of Brașov's story. Built and expanded between the 14th and 18th centuries, it was the spiritual centre of the Romanian Orthodox community at a time when Romanians were barred from living inside the city. The mix of Gothic stonework and Orthodox frescoes reflects that layered history clearly, and the churchyard gravestones, some dating back centuries, are worth a slow read.

Historic monuments and fortifications

Brașov Fortress Walls, Bastions & The White Tower form a defensive ring that once protected the Saxon city from Ottoman raids and Transylvanian conflicts. You can walk sections of the original walls and climb into several restored bastions, each one built and maintained by a different guild. The Weavers' Bastion, for example, now houses a small museum. The White Tower, perched on the hillside above, offers a clear view of how the whole system was designed to work together.

Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei) is the only gate from Brașov's medieval fortifications that has survived intact. Built in 1559 by the tailors' guild, it's a slender, four-turreted tower that once marked the entrance to the Romanian Șchei quarter. Standing beneath it, you get a tangible sense of the social boundary it represented. This was the point where two communities, Saxon and Romanian, officially met.

Castles and ruins

Bran Castle sits about 30 kilometres from Brașov and is one of the most recognisable buildings in Romania. Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop, the 14th-century fortress is often linked to the Dracula legend, though its real history as a royal residence and customs post is compelling enough on its own. The interior rooms are furnished with pieces from Queen Marie of Romania's collection, and the views from the upper towers across the surrounding valleys are genuinely striking.

Râșnov Fortress (Cetatea Râșnov) was built between 1211 and 1225 by Teutonic Knights as a refuge for the local population during Tatar invasions. Sitting 150 metres above the town of Râșnov, it's one of the best-preserved peasant fortresses in Transylvania. Unlike a noble's castle, this was a community stronghold. Inside the walls you'll find the remains of houses, a well, and a small church, all built to sustain an entire village during a siege.

Cultural museum

The First Romanian School (Prima Școală Românească) is housed in a building beside St. Nicholas Church in the Șchei neighbourhood and holds a remarkable place in Romanian cultural history. This is where the first books in the Romanian language were printed in the 16th century, and where generations of Romanian children received an education despite the restrictions of Saxon rule. The museum preserves original manuscripts, early printed texts, and classroom artefacts that make the story feel immediate rather than distant.

Urban square

Council Square (Piața Sfatului) is the natural gathering point of Brașov's old town, framed by colourful baroque facades and anchored by the 15th-century Council House at its centre. The square has served as a marketplace, a place of public punishment, and a stage for seasonal festivals. Today it hosts outdoor concerts and Christmas markets. Sitting at one of the café terraces and watching the mix of locals and visitors cross the cobblestones is a perfectly good way to spend an afternoon.

Natural spaces and viewpoints

Tâmpa Mountain & The Brașov Sign rises directly above the old town, and a cable car or a well-marked hiking trail gets you to the top in under an hour. The large white letters spelling out BRAȘOV on the hillside, a deliberate nod to the Hollywood sign, are visible from the city below. The real reward, though, is the panoramic view from the summit platform looking back down over the red rooftops and the Black Church tower.

Poiana Brașov Ski Resort is Romania's most popular mountain resort, sitting about 12 kilometres from the city centre at an altitude of around 1,000 metres. In winter it offers a solid range of slopes for all levels, with reliable snow cover and well-maintained lifts. In summer the same trails become hiking and mountain-biking routes, making it a year-round destination.
