It houses a science museum, an IMAX cinema, an opera house, and more. Even wandering the outdoor spaces between the buildings, reflected in the shallow pools that surround them, is worth the trip on its own.

La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange) tells a different architectural story, one written in late Gothic stone in the 15th century. Built when Valencia was one of the most powerful trading cities in the Mediterranean, this UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the city's commercial exchange for silk merchants. Step inside the Sala de Contratación and look up at the twisted spiral columns rising to a vaulted ceiling. It's one of the most quietly impressive interiors in Spain.

Wildlife and nature

L'Oceanogràfic sits within the City of Arts & Sciences complex and is the largest aquarium in Europe. It's divided into themed zones representing the world's major ocean environments — the Arctic, the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and more — and is home to sharks, beluga whales, and thousands of other marine species. The underwater tunnel that runs through the shark tank alone makes it worth the entrance fee, especially if you're visiting with children.

Bioparc Valencia takes a different approach to the traditional zoo. Built around the concept of zoo-immersion, it recreates African habitats so convincingly that barriers between visitors and animals are largely invisible. Across its 25 acres you'll find elephants, gorillas, lions, and around 150 species in total, all living in environments designed to reflect their natural ecosystems. It's open every day of the year and sits conveniently close to the Turia Gardens.

Parks and green spaces

Jardí del Túria (Turia Gardens) is the green spine of the city, stretching roughly nine kilometres along the course of the old Turia river, which was diverted after catastrophic flooding in 1957. The dry riverbed was converted into a linear park that connects the historic centre to the City of Arts & Sciences, and locals use it daily for cycling, running, and picnicking. It's the kind of urban space that makes you understand why Valencians are so attached to their city.

Playa de la Malvarrosa (Malvarrosa Beach) is Valencia's main city beach, a wide sandy stretch backed by a promenade lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood and, of course, paella — a dish that originated in this region. The beach is easily reachable by tram from the city centre and stays lively well into the evening in summer. Come in the morning for a quieter swim, or in the late afternoon when the light turns golden over the water.

History and heritage

Catedral de Valencia (Valencia Cathedral) is a fascinating architectural mix, with Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements layered on top of each other across centuries of construction. Inside, the Capilla del Santo Cáliz claims to house the Holy Grail — a small agate cup that has been venerated here since the Middle Ages. Climb the Miguelete bell tower for one of the best panoramic views over the old city's rooftops.

Torres de Serranos (Serranos Towers) once formed the northern gateway into the medieval city and are among the best-preserved Gothic city gates in Spain. Built at the end of the 14th century, they were later used as a prison. Today you can climb to the top for sweeping views over the Turia Gardens and the old town. Entry is free on Sundays, which makes it an easy addition to a morning walk through the historic centre.

Plaza de la Virgen & Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados is the emotional heart of Valencia's old town. The square itself is a natural gathering point, flanked by the cathedral on one side and the baroque basilica on the other. Inside the basilica, the image of the Virgen de los Desamparados — the city's patron saint — is displayed above the main altar, and the devotion Valencians show her, particularly during the Fallas festival in March, says a great deal about the city's character.

Mercado Central (Central Market) is one of the largest and most beautiful covered markets in Europe, housed in a modernist building completed in 1928. More than 300 stalls sell fresh produce, cured meats, cheeses, and local specialities under a soaring iron and glass roof decorated with ceramic tiles. Go on a weekday morning when it's at its busiest, pick up some local oranges or a wedge of manchego, and take your time.
