Messina

Santuario della Madonna di Montalto climbs the hillside above the city centre, offering a quieter, more contemplative experience than the busy Duomo. The sanctuary has been a place of pilgrimage for Messinese residents for centuries, and the walk or drive up rewards you with increasingly wide views over the strait. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and the decoration restrained. It's a genuine place of local devotion, not a tourist set piece.

Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani is one of the few buildings in Messina that survived the catastrophic 1908 earthquake largely intact, which makes it extraordinary. This small Norman-Arab church, half-sunken below the modern street level after centuries of urban change, dates to the 12th century and carries the architectural fingerprints of three cultures, Norman, Arab, and Byzantine, in its striped stone arches and rounded apse. It takes only minutes to visit but stays with you.

Historic monuments

Fontana di Orione sits in Piazza del Duomo directly in front of the cathedral and is worth pausing at before or after your visit inside. Carved in the mid-16th century by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, a pupil of Michelangelo, the fountain depicts Orion, the mythological founder of Messina, surrounded by allegorical river figures. The detail in the stonework is exceptional, and the fountain's position makes it a natural gathering point at any hour of the day.

Forte San Salvatore & Statua della Madonna della Lettera guards the entrance to Messina's harbour from a narrow peninsula at the port's northern tip. The fortress itself is an imposing piece of military architecture, but the landmark most visible from arriving ferries and Messina bus connections is the tall column topped by a gilded statue of the Madonna della Lettera, the city's patron, said to have sent a letter of blessing to Messina in the first century. The combination of fortification and religious monument is distinctly Messinese.

Cultural highlights

Museo Regionale Interdisciplinare di Messina holds one of the most important art collections in Sicily and tends to be quieter than its reputation deserves. Among the highlights are two large canvases by Caravaggio, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Raising of Lazarus, painted during his time in Sicily in 1609. The museum also preserves works salvaged from churches destroyed in the 1908 earthquake, which adds another layer of historical weight to the collection.

Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II is Messina's grand 19th-century opera house, a building that signals the city's cultural ambitions in the decades before the earthquake reduced much of it to rubble. Rebuilt and restored, the theatre continues to host opera, ballet, and classical concerts through the season. If you can time a bus to Messina around a performance, it's worth booking ahead. Natural spaces

Piazza Unità d'Italia & The Messina Waterfront is where the city opens up to the sea most directly. The piazza itself is large and uncluttered, a good place to get your bearings when you first arrive, and the waterfront walk north or south from here is an easy, pleasant way to spend an hour.

Capo Peloro & Punta del Faro marks the north-eastern tip of Sicily, the point where the Strait of Messina is at its narrowest. The area around the cape includes a coastal nature reserve with two saltwater lagoons, and the decommissioned electricity pylon rising 225 metres above the shoreline is an unmistakable local landmark. Come at dusk when the light on the water between Sicily and Calabria is at its best.

Palazzo Prefettura & Piazza del Municipio anchors the civic life of the city in a broad, well-proportioned square. The Prefettura building, rebuilt in the early 20th century after the earthquake, gives the piazza a formal dignity, and the surrounding streets are good for an unhurried walk between sights.
