New Bazaar is Tirana's main open-air market, rebuilt and reopened in 2016 in a design that blends traditional arcade architecture with modern materials. Stalls sell everything from fresh produce and spices to handmade crafts and secondhand books. It's the kind of place where you can pick up a bag of dried figs, overhear three languages at once, and watch the city go about its actual daily life rather than its tourist-facing version. Museums

National History Museum stands on the northern edge of Skanderbeg Square and is impossible to miss. Its facade is covered by a vast mosaic depicting Albanian history from antiquity to the 20th century. Inside, the collections trace the country's story from Illyrian civilisation through Ottoman rule, independence, and the communist period. The archaeological floor alone is worth the entrance fee, with artefacts that rarely get the international attention they deserve.

Bunk'Art 1 & 2 are two separate museums that together tell the story of Albania under communist rule, and both are worth your time. Bunk'Art 1 is set inside a massive nuclear bunker on the outskirts of the city, inaugurated in 1978 for the regime's top leadership. Its tunnels and rooms have been turned into an immersive account of the Albanian army and the Hoxha era. Bunk'Art 2, closer to the city centre, focuses on the Interior Ministry and the mechanics of state control. Together, they offer a remarkably frank account of a period the country is still working through.

House of Leaves opened in 2017 in the former headquarters of the Sigurimi, Albania's communist-era secret police. The building's ivy-covered exterior gives it its name, though locals note the "leaves" also refer to the vast files the regime kept on its own citizens. Inside, original surveillance equipment, interrogation rooms, and thousands of documents create an experience that is sobering rather than sensationalised. It's considered one of the most significant museums of its kind in the post-communist world.

Historic sites

Et'hem Bey Mosque sits at the edge of Skanderbeg Square and is one of the few buildings in central Tirana that survived the communist period largely intact. Construction began in 1791 and took several decades to complete. The interior features unusually detailed frescoes depicting trees, waterfalls, and bridges, imagery rarely found in Ottoman religious architecture. The mosque was forcibly closed during Albania's atheist state period but reopened in 1991 and remains an active place of worship.

Clock Tower of Tirana stands just beside Et'hem Bey Mosque and dates to the early 19th century, making it one of the oldest structures in the city centre. At around 35 metres tall, it's a modest but genuine piece of Ottoman-era Tirana that has endured through every political upheaval since. You can climb the interior for a close-up view of the bell mechanism and a look out over the square below.

Natural spaces

Grand Park of Tirana stretches south of the city centre around an artificial lake and offers a real escape from the urban noise without leaving the city limits. Locals jog, cycle, and picnic here on weekends, and the tree-lined paths are well maintained year-round. The park also contains a small zoo and an open-air theatre, but its real appeal is simply the space. Somewhere to slow down and watch Tirana from a different angle.

Mount Dajti National Park rises just east of the city and is reachable by cable car, putting a forested mountain environment within about 30 minutes of the centre. At roughly 1,600 metres at its peak, the views back over Tirana and towards the Adriatic on clear days are genuinely striking. The park has walking trails through beech and oak forest, and a handful of restaurants near the upper cable car station serve traditional Albanian grills.
