La Martorana dazzles with its Norman-era mosaics, including a rare portrait of King Roger II being crowned by Christ. San Cataldo, with its three distinctive red domes, is far more austere inside but no less compelling. Its simplicity makes the Arab-Norman influence on the exterior even easier to read.

Squares and public spaces

Quattro Canti is the theatrical Baroque crossroads at the very heart of the old city, where two main streets intersect beneath four curved, symmetrical façades. Each façade carries a fountain, a Spanish king, and a patron saint of Palermo's four historic districts. It's a place you'll pass through multiple times without tiring of it, especially in the early morning when the light hits the stone at a low angle.

Fontana Pretoria stands just a short walk from Quattro Canti and fills an entire piazza with its enormous 16th-century marble fountain, originally commissioned for a Florentine villa before being sold to Palermo. Markets

Mercato di Ballarò is Palermo's oldest and largest street market, sprawling through the Albergheria neighbourhood in a tangle of stalls, carts, and vendor calls. You'll find everything from fresh swordfish and blood oranges to cheap clothing and household goods. The food stalls are the main draw. Try a panelle (chickpea fritter) sandwich or a piece of sfincione, the thick Sicilian pizza that bears little resemblance to anything you'd find on the mainland. Beaches

Mondello Beach lies about 11 kilometres north of the city centre, tucked into a bay between two rocky headlands. The water is clear and shallow, the sand is fine, and the Art Nouveau bathing lido that anchors the beach has been there since the early 1900s.
