ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is the kind of art museum that earns its reputation. Nine floors of Danish and international art are topped by Olafur Eliasson's Your Rainbow Panorama, a 150-metre circular walkway enclosed in floor-to-ceiling coloured glass that wraps the rooftop and gives you a 360-degree view of the city filtered through every colour of the spectrum. Plan at least two to three hours if you want to explore the full collection alongside the rooftop installation.

Historic sites

Aarhus Cathedral (Aarhus Domkirke) is the longest church in Denmark, stretching over 93 metres from west door to altar. Construction began in the 12th century, and the interior still shows its layers of history. Look for the original Romanesque apse alongside the later Gothic nave. The frescoes covering the walls were whitewashed during the Reformation and only uncovered again in the 19th century, giving the interior an almost archaeological quality.

Marselisborg Palace serves as the summer residence of the Danish royal family and sits within a large forested park on the southern edge of the city. When the royals are away, the palace gardens open to the public, offering a quiet walk among formal flower beds and mature trees. The Latin Quarter (Latinerkvarteret) is the oldest part of central Aarhus, a tightly packed grid of cobbled streets dating back to the medieval city. It is a seasonal installation, typically open during summer, and the walk around it at sunset, with the bay on all sides and the forest behind, is one of the more quietly memorable things you can do in the city.
