Devín Castle sits roughly 9 km west of the city centre, perched above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The ruins date back to at least the 9th century, when the site served as a stronghold of the Great Moravian Empire, and archaeological finds suggest Roman occupation long before that. Napoleon's troops destroyed much of the structure in 1809, which is why you see atmospheric rubble rather than intact walls. Religious sites

St. Martin's Cathedral is the city's oldest and most significant church, a Gothic structure whose construction began in the 14th century. For nearly 300 years it served as the coronation church of Hungarian kings and queens, and a gilded crown on top of the steeple still marks that history. The interior is relatively spare by Central European standards, which lets the architecture speak clearly. It stands just outside the Old Town walls, close enough to combine easily with a morning walk through the historic centre.

Church of St. Elisabeth (Blue Church) is exactly what the name promises: an entirely blue building that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it. Designed by Hungarian architect Ödön Lechner and built between 1909 and 1913, it is a textbook example of Hungarian Art Nouveau, with pale blue render, blue glazed roof tiles, and mosaic details produced by the Zsolnay factory in Pécs. The interior carries the same colour palette through to the pews and altar, making it one of the most visually cohesive church spaces you will find anywhere in the region.

Urban landmarks

Main Square (Hlavné námestie) is the natural gathering point of the Old Town, ringed by Renaissance and Baroque buildings and anchored by a central fountain. The Old Town Hall on its northern edge is one of the oldest civic buildings in Slovakia, and its courtyard hosts open-air events through the warmer months. Sitting at one of the square's outdoor tables with a coffee gives you a good vantage point for watching the city go about its day.

UFO Observation Deck & Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising (Most SNP) is the kind of structure that divides opinion, which is part of what makes it interesting. The cable-stayed bridge, completed in 1972, carries a flying-saucer-shaped observation platform on one of its pylons, 95 metres above the Danube. The deck holds a restaurant and a viewing terrace with a panoramic sweep across the river, the castle, and the Old Town. It is the best elevated perspective on the city you can get.

Michael's Gate is the only surviving city gate from Bratislava's medieval fortifications, marking the northern entrance to the Old Town. The tower dates to the 14th century, with a Baroque onion dome added in the 18th. A small museum inside traces the history of the city's defences, and the gate's arch frames a long pedestrian street that is one of the most photographed views in Bratislava.

Culture

Slovak National Theatre is the city's main venue for opera, ballet, and drama, housed in a Neo-Baroque building on the edge of the Old Town. Even if you are not catching a performance, the building's exterior and the fountain square in front of it are worth a look.
