Huerto del Cura (Priest's Garden) sits within the wider Palmeral and offers a more curated version of the same experience. It's compact enough to explore in an hour but detailed enough to reward a slow, unhurried visit.

Parque Municipal de Elche (Municipal Park) runs alongside the Vinalopó River and provides a green corridor through the urban centre. Families gather here on weekends, and the combination of mature trees, small ponds, and open lawns makes it a natural place to decompress between sightseeing stops. The park also connects several of Elche's historic landmarks, so it doubles as a pleasant route between them.

Museums

Dama de Elche (Lady of Elche) refers both to one of the most important sculptures in European archaeology and to the museum experience built around her story. The original fifth-century BC Iberian bust, a woman in elaborate headdress and jewellery, now resides in Madrid, but the Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche in the Alcázar holds a high-quality replica and tells the full story of the discovery made in La Alcudia in 1897. The detail in the stonework, even in reproduction, is extraordinary.

Museo del Palmeral (Palm Grove Museum) occupies a historic building within the palm grove itself and traces the cultural and agricultural history of Elche's defining landscape. Exhibits cover the Moorish irrigation systems that made the grove possible, the social life that grew up around it, and the techniques still used to harvest the palms today. It's a focused, well-organised collection that adds real depth to a walk through the Palmeral.

Historic sites

Basílica de Santa María is the baroque centrepiece of Elche's old town, built between the 17th and 18th centuries on the site of a former mosque. Its single-nave interior is striking in its scale, but the basilica is best known as the venue for the Misteri d'Elx, a medieval sacred drama performed here every 14 and 15 August that has been protected by papal privilege since 1632. Even outside of August, the building is worth visiting for its architecture and the sense of living tradition it carries.

Alcázar de la Señoría / Palau d'Altamira is a fortified palace that has stood at the edge of Elche's historic centre since the 15th century, built over earlier Moorish foundations. Today it houses the city's archaeology and history museum, making it both a monument and a destination in its own right. The tower offers elevated views across the rooftops toward the palm grove, and the layered stonework of the building itself tells the story of the city's shifting rulers.

Torre de la Calaforra (Calahorra Tower) is a Moorish defensive tower that once guarded one of the main entrances to the medieval city. It's one of the best-preserved remnants of Elche's Islamic past and stands close to the river, where you can appreciate its solid, functional design without any reconstruction. Catching it in the late afternoon light, when the stone takes on a warm amber tone, makes for one of the most photogenic moments in the city.

La Alcudia Archaeological Site & Museum lies just south of the city centre on a low plateau where Elche's earliest settlements were established. This is where the Dama de Elche was unearthed, and ongoing excavations continue to reveal layers of Iberian, Roman, and early Christian occupation. The on-site museum contextualises the finds clearly, and walking the excavated streets gives you a tangible sense of how long people have been drawn to this particular patch of ground.

Misteri d'Elx (Mystery Play of Elche) is a sacred musical drama of medieval origin, performed entirely in Old Valencian inside the Basílica de Santa María each August. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it depicts the Dormition and Assumption of the Virgin Mary using elaborate stage machinery, including a gilded cloud that descends from the basilica's dome.
