Èze Village perches on a rocky outcrop 430 metres above the sea, about 12 kilometres east of Nice along the Corniche road. The medieval stone village is remarkably intact, with vaulted passageways, a ruined castle at the summit, and an exotic garden that frames one of the most dramatic coastal views on the Riviera. It's a straightforward half-day trip from the city, and the Nice bus network connects the two easily.

Historic sites

Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate stands at the heart of Vieux-Nice on Place Rossetti, its green-and-yellow tiled dome visible from several streets away. Built in the 17th century and dedicated to Nice's patron saint, the interior is a full expression of Baroque decoration — gilded chapels, painted ceilings, and elaborate stonework layered over every surface. The square in front, lined with café terraces, is one of the most pleasant spots in the old town to sit and slow down.

Cimiez Hill & Roman Ruins (Arènes de Cimiez) take you back to when Nice was the Roman settlement of Cemenelum. The elliptical amphitheatre, measuring 67 by 56 metres and once capable of holding 5,000 spectators, still stands in remarkably good condition alongside the remains of Roman baths. The surrounding park is quiet and shaded, and the Musée Matisse is just steps away, making the whole Cimiez hill worth an unhurried afternoon.

Natural spaces

Promenade des Anglais is Nice's famous seafront walkway stretching roughly seven kilometres along the Baie des Anges. The wide paved promenade runs between the beach and a boulevard of grand Belle Époque hotels, and it works just as well for an early-morning run as for a slow evening stroll. The pebble beach directly below is free to access, though you'll need to rent a lounger from one of the private sections if you want to lie flat comfortably.

Colline du Château (Castle Hill) rises steeply at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais and offers the clearest panoramic view of the city and the bay. The hilltop park is named after a medieval castle demolished in 1706, and today it holds waterfalls, shaded paths, and a small cemetery. You can reach the top by lift, staircase, or a gentle zigzag path. The lift is free and saves your legs for the walk back through the old town below.

Market

Cours Saleya Market fills a long open square in Vieux-Nice every morning except Monday, when the flower stalls give way to antique dealers. Tuesday through Sunday it's one of the most vivid produce markets in the south of France — stalls piled with olives, lavender, local cheeses, and vegetables that actually smell like vegetables. Arrive before 10am to browse before the crowds build and the best produce sells out.
