The building itself, a grand early-20th-century neoclassical structure, adds a sense of occasion to every visit.

Natural spaces

Parque Farroupilha (Parque da Redenção) is the green lung of Porto Alegre and the place where locals go to breathe. Spanning roughly 37 hectares near the university district, it fills up on Sunday mornings with families, cyclists, dog walkers, and the famous antiques and craft fair that takes over the central paths. The enormous fig trees provide shade that makes an afternoon stroll genuinely pleasant even in summer.

Orla do Guaíba (Guaíba Riverfront) is where the city turns to face the water. The renovated promenade stretches along the shore of Lake Guaíba (technically a lake, despite what locals will debate) and draws crowds every evening for one of the most consistently spectacular sunsets in Brazil. Grab a tereré or a cold chopp from one of the kiosks and watch the sky turn orange over the water.

Jardim Botânico de Porto Alegre offers a quieter, more contemplative side of the city. The garden houses thousands of plant species across themed sections, including a Japanese garden and a greenhouse with tropical specimens. It's also a genuine research institution, which means the plant labeling is unusually thorough. A nice detail if you're curious about the Atlantic Forest flora of southern Brazil.

Cultural centers and museums

Usina do Gasômetro is a decommissioned 1920s power plant on the Guaíba shore, now one of Porto Alegre's main cultural venues. The industrial bones, exposed brick, iron beams, and a chimney stack that still defines the city skyline, give it a character that purpose-built arts centers rarely achieve. Inside you'll find cinema screenings, exhibitions, and live performances, and the rooftop terrace offers a panoramic view of the river.

Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS has been drawing visitors since 1967, but a major overhaul in 1998 turned it into the interactive, hands-on space it is today. Spread across the campus of the Pontifical Catholic University, the museum covers everything from paleontology, with an impressive collection of fossils from Rio Grande do Sul, to physics experiments you can operate yourself. It works equally well for curious adults and for families with kids.

Historic and religious sites

Catedral Metropolitana de Porto Alegre took over a century to build, with construction beginning in 1921 and the main structure completed only in the 1980s. The result is a monumental neo-Renaissance cathedral that dominates the city center skyline. Step inside to see the high nave, the detailed mosaic work, and the quiet that somehow persists even on busy weekday afternoons.

Markets and urban landmarks

Mercado Público de Porto Alegre has been the commercial and social heart of the city since 1869. The iron-and-glass market hall on Praça XV de Novembro sells everything from spices and local cheeses to fresh flowers and artisan cachaça. It's also home to several traditional bars and lunch counters where you can eat a proper Gaucho meal without going anywhere near a tourist trap.

Estádio Beira-Rio (Estádio José Pinheiro Borda) is the home ground of Sport Club Internacional and one of the great football cathedrals of Brazilian soccer. Sitting right on the Guaíba shore, the stadium holds around 50,000 spectators and hosted matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Even if you can't catch a match, the setting alone, water on one side and roaring stands on the other, makes it worth the bus to Porto Alegre just to see a game.
