Street vendors sell acarajé and coconut water from ceramic bowls, and on weekend afternoons capoeira groups often perform in the open space. It's a good place to get your bearings before exploring the surrounding streets.

Religious sites

Igreja e Convento de São Francisco stands just off Terreiro de Jesus and has arguably the most ornate interior in the city. The nave is covered floor to ceiling in gilded carved wood — estimates put the gold used in the decoration at around 800 kilograms — and the blue-and-white azulejo tilework in the cloister courtyard offers a striking contrast. Arrive early to avoid the tour groups and to catch the light on the gold at its best.

Igreja do Nosso Senhor do Bonfim sits on the Itapagipe Peninsula, a short ride from the centre, and carries a significance in Salvador that goes well beyond tourism. The church is the focal point of the Lavagem do Bonfim, one of the city's most important religious celebrations, and its railings are covered in thousands of colourful fita ribbons tied there as offerings. Inside, a room called the Sala dos Milagres is lined with photographs, paintings, and wax body parts left by devotees giving thanks for answered prayers.

Urban landmarks

Elevador Lacerda connects the Cidade Alta (upper city) to the Cidade Baixa (lower city) in about 30 seconds and has been doing so since 1873, making it one of the oldest urban elevators in the world. The view from the top platform across the Baía de Todos os Santos is worth the small fare even if you have no particular reason to go down. At sunset, the light turns the water a deep copper colour.

Mercado Modelo sits at the base of the Elevador Lacerda and occupies a former customs house right on the waterfront. The two-storey market is packed with stalls selling everything from carved wooden figurines and leather goods to Candomblé ritual items and local cachaça. It's a practical place to pick up gifts, and the ground-floor restaurants serve decent moqueca if you want to eat with a view of the bay.

Natural spaces

Praia do Porto da Barra is a small, sheltered crescent of sand in the Barra neighbourhood that consistently ranks among the most swimmable urban beaches in Brazil. The water is calm because the bay protects it from open-ocean swell, and the beach faces west, so the late-afternoon light is exceptional. It fills up fast on weekends, so arriving before midday gives you a better chance of finding space near the water.

Parque Metropolitano de Pituaçu is a large urban nature reserve on the southern edge of the city, built around a freshwater lagoon surrounded by Atlantic Forest. You can walk or cycle the trails, spot migratory birds along the lakeside, and largely escape the noise of the city. It's a good option if you've spent a few days in the historic centre and want a quieter half-day before catching your onward bus.

Museum

MAFRO – Museu Afro-Brasileiro occupies a building on Terreiro de Jesus and holds a collection of more than 1,100 objects documenting African and Afro-Brazilian material culture. The highlight for many visitors is a series of large carved wooden panels by artist Carybé depicting the Orixás, the deities of the Candomblé religion, in extraordinary detail. Run by the Federal University of Bahia, it offers one of the most focused and thoughtful introductions to the African roots of Bahian culture available anywhere in the city.

Monument

Farol da Barra (Forte de Santo Antônio) marks the point where the Baía de Todos os Santos meets the open Atlantic. The surrounding fort dates back to 1536, making it one of the oldest Portuguese fortifications in the Americas. The lighthouse is still operational, and inside the fort you'll find the Museu Náutico, which displays navigational instruments, maps, and artefacts recovered from shipwrecks along the Bahian coast. The rocky promontory out front is a favourite spot for locals to watch the sunset.
