Come on a Friday evening and the surrounding streets fill with live music, open-air bars, and the kind of spontaneous dancing that makes Rio famous. Viewpoints

Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) rises 396 metres straight out of Guanabara Bay, and the two-stage cable car that climbs it has been running since 1912. The first stop, Morro da Urca, already gives you sweeping views over Botafogo and the bay. The second takes you to the granite summit where the city, the ocean, and the distant Cristo Redentor all align in one frame. Sunset is the classic time to go, and for good reason. The light turns the bay a deep copper before the city lights take over.

Mirante Dona Marta is a free public lookout on the slopes above Santa Teresa that most visitors overlook in favour of the cable car. A winding road leads to a terrace with one of the clearest face-on views of Cristo Redentor anywhere in the city, with Botafogo and the bay spread out below. It's a favourite spot for photographers at golden hour, and because it sits within a quieter part of the hillside, you can usually enjoy the view without a crowd pressing in around you.

Beaches

Copacabana Beach stretches for four kilometres along one of the world's most recognisable seafronts. The wide promenade with its black-and-white wave mosaic runs the full length, lined with kiosks selling coconut water and cold beer. On weekends the beach fills with volleyball games, football kick-abouts, and families setting up for the day. It's a working-class neighbourhood at heart, and the beach reflects that open, everyone-welcome energy. The New Year's Eve fireworks here draw millions of people to the sand.

Ipanema Beach sits just west of Copacabana and has a slightly different character, calmer, with a strong local crowd and a backdrop of the twin peaks called Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers). Different stretches of the beach have their own informal regulars: surfers, families, the LGBTQ+ community, and football players all claim their patch. The water is generally cleaner than Copacabana, and the streets immediately behind the beach are lined with good restaurants and independent boutiques worth exploring after a swim.

Natural spaces

Tijuca National Park covers roughly 39.5 square kilometres of Atlantic Forest right inside the city limits, making it one of the largest urban forests in the world. Trails lead to waterfalls, rocky viewpoints, and patches of forest so dense you forget you're surrounded by a metropolis of millions. The park is home to howler monkeys, toucans, and over 300 bird species. It also contains Corcovado Mountain, so a visit can combine a proper hike with the Cristo Redentor experience rather than just the rack railway.

Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1808 and covers 54 hectares of landscaped gardens and preserved Atlantic Forest in the upscale neighbourhood of the same name. The avenue of imperial palms planted in the 19th century is the garden's most photographed feature. Each tree stands over 30 metres tall and the row of them creates an almost ceremonial corridor. Beyond the palms you'll find orchid houses, a lake with giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, and shaded paths that make it a genuinely pleasant escape from the midday heat.

Museu Nacional de Belas Artes sits in a grand neoclassical building in the city centre and holds the most significant collection of Brazilian fine art in the country. The permanent galleries trace Brazilian painting from the colonial period through to the 20th century, with particular strength in 19th-century academic works and modernist canvases. European pieces and decorative arts round out the collection. The building itself, modelled loosely on the Louvre, is worth a look even if you only step into the entrance hall.

Maracanã Stadium is one of football's most storied venues, with a current capacity of 78,838 that still makes it one of the largest stadiums in the world. It hosted the 1950 and 2014 World Cup finals and the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics. On a match day the atmosphere inside is unlike anything a neutral fan expects, with drums, flares, and coordinated chanting that starts well before kick-off. If no game is scheduled, guided tours take you through the dressing rooms, onto the pitch, and into the press box.
