After a decade-long restoration, the museum reopened in 2022 with updated permanent galleries covering colonial history, the independence movement, and everyday life in 19th-century Brazil. The formal gardens surrounding the building are free to enter and offer a calm escape from the city's pace.

Mercadão – Mercado Municipal de São Paulo is a covered market built in 1933, its nave lit by enormous stained-glass windows depicting scenes of agriculture and cattle ranching. The ground floor is packed with spice vendors, cheese counters, and stalls selling dried fruits and bacalhau. The mortadela sandwich sold at the upper-floor snack bars has become a São Paulo institution. Enormous, messy, and worth every bite.

Catedral Metropolitana da Sé anchors the Praça da Sé at the very centre of the city. The Neo-Gothic cathedral took over 40 years to complete and can hold up to 8,000 people under its vaulted ceilings. The crypt beneath the main altar is open to visitors and contains the remains of several historical figures connected to the city's founding.
