Arch of Galerius (Kamara) stands at the top of Egnatia Street and was built around 305 AD to commemorate Emperor Galerius's victories over the Persians. The carved relief panels wrapping around the piers show battle scenes in remarkable detail. It functions today as a natural meeting point for locals, so you'll often find people sitting on the steps around it at any hour of the day.

Religious sites

Church of Saint Demetrius (Hagios Demetrios) is the largest church in Greece and the spiritual heart of Thessaloniki, dedicated to the city's patron saint. The current structure dates largely from the 5th century, rebuilt after a devastating fire, though the crypt beneath it is older still and houses early Christian relics and mosaics. The interior columns, salvaged from earlier Roman buildings, give the nave an atmosphere that feels ancient in the most tangible sense.

Hagia Sophia Thessaloniki (Agia Sofia) predates its more famous Istanbul namesake in spirit if not in scale, and served as the city's cathedral for centuries. The dome mosaic depicting the Ascension, dating to the 9th century, is one of the finest surviving examples of middle Byzantine art. The church sits in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, making it easy to slip in for a few minutes and come away genuinely moved.

Museums

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki holds one of the richest collections in Greece, with finds spanning prehistoric settlements through the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The star exhibits are the gold burial objects from the royal tombs of ancient Macedon, including intricate wreaths, vessels, and armour that make the connection to Alexander the Great feel immediate rather than abstract. Plan at least two hours here if you want to move through it properly.

Museum of Byzantine Culture is one of the few museums in the world dedicated entirely to Byzantine art and everyday life, and it does the job with real clarity. The permanent collection is arranged thematically, covering death rituals, domestic objects, and ecclesiastical treasures, so you leave with a sense of how people actually lived rather than just a parade of icons. The building itself, designed by architect Kyriakos Krokos, won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2005.

Squares and plazas

Aristotelous Square (Plateia Aristotelous) is the grand neoclassical centrepiece of the lower city, opening directly onto the waterfront. Designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in the 1920s, it is lined with arcaded buildings and anchored by cafés where Thessalonians spend hours over a single coffee. It is the kind of square that rewards sitting still in as much as walking through.

Historic district

Ano Poli (Upper Town) & Byzantine Walls is the neighbourhood that climbs the hillside above the modern city, preserving a texture of timber-framed houses, cobbled lanes, and neighbourhood tavernas that the lower city lost to the 1917 fire. The Byzantine walls that ring it stretch for several kilometres and are largely walkable. From various points along the ramparts you get sweeping views back over the rooftops and down to the sea.

Trigonion Tower (Tower of Eptapyrgio / Yedi Kule) sits at the northeastern corner of those same walls, a cylindrical Ottoman artillery tower built in the late 15th century that rises 22 metres above the hilltop. Known informally as "Thessaloniki's balcony," it offers the highest publicly accessible vantage point in the city. The panorama from the top, sea on one side and mountains on the other, makes the uphill walk entirely worthwhile.
