Plantin-Moretus Museum occupies the 16th-century home and printing workshop of Christophe Plantin, one of the most influential publishers in European history. The original wooden printing presses are still here, along with a beautifully preserved library, copper engraving plates, and works by Rubens. Red Star Line Museum tells the story of the two million emigrants who left Europe for America through the port of Antwerp between 1873 and 1934. The original warehouses where passengers were processed and inspected have been converted into a thoughtful, human-scale museum. Historic sites

Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) is the tallest church in the Low Countries and took nearly two centuries to complete. Its Gothic spire still dominates the Antwerp skyline, and inside you'll find four major works by Rubens, including The Descent from the Cross — paintings created specifically for this space that look exactly right in it. Even if you visit a lot of churches, this one is worth the entrance fee.

Het Steen Castle is Antwerp's oldest building, a medieval fortress that has stood on the banks of the Scheldt since the 13th century. After a major renovation it reopened as a visitor centre and gateway to the waterfront, with exhibitions on Antwerp's history as a port city. The surrounding promenade along the river is one of the nicest stretches in the city for a slow walk.

Urban landmarks

Grote Markt is Antwerp's central square, framed by ornate guild houses and the Renaissance town hall. It's the natural place to get your bearings when you arrive. Art gallery

Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) houses one of the most important collections of Flemish and Belgian art anywhere, spanning from the 14th century to the 20th. After a long renovation, the museum reopened with a striking new interior connecting the grand 19th-century building with a contemporary wing. The works by Jan van Eyck, Rubens, and Rik Wouters alone justify the visit, but the building itself has become part of the experience.

Park

Middelheim Museum is an open-air sculpture park spread across a large wooded estate in the south of the city. More than 200 sculptures are permanently installed across the grounds, ranging from Auguste Rodin to Ai Weiwei. The setting — old trees, open lawns, a 17th-century manor house — makes it feel more like a long afternoon walk than a museum visit. Entry is free, and it's one of the best ways to spend a few hours away from the city centre.
