Museo de la Ciudad de Chetumal tells the story of the city itself rather than the ancient civilization that preceded it. Housed in a building near the waterfront, it covers Chetumal's founding, its destruction by a 1955 hurricane, and its rebuilding as a planned modern city. It's a compact visit, but the photographs and personal accounts from long-time residents make it feel surprisingly intimate for a municipal museum.

Waterfronts

Malecón de Chetumal (Bahía de Chetumal Waterfront) is the main promenade along the bay, stretching for several kilometers past sculptures, open-air plazas, and views across the calm, greenish water toward Belize. Locals jog here in the early morning and families gather at dusk. It's less a tourist attraction than a living part of the city. The water is unusually still because the bay is shallow, which gives it a glassy quality unlike anything on the open Caribbean coast.

Calderitas is a small fishing village just a few kilometers north of the city center, easily reached by local bus or taxi. The waterfront is lined with seafood restaurants serving fresh fish and ceviche, and the pace is noticeably slower than in Chetumal proper. On weekends it fills up with families from the city, but on a weekday afternoon you can sit at a table practically at the water's edge with very little company.

Archaeological ruins

Oxtankah Archaeological Zone sits just a short drive from the city, making it one of the most accessible Maya sites in the region. The structures here were built between the 4th and 6th centuries and cluster around two plazas (the Bees Plaza and the Columns Plaza) surrounded by dense vegetation. What makes Oxtankah particularly unusual is a 16th-century Spanish colonial chapel built directly on top of Maya structures, a visible reminder of the collision between two civilizations.

Kohunlich Archaeological Zone is about 65 km west of Chetumal along Highway 186, and the drive through the jungle is part of the experience. The site is best known for its Temple of the Masks, where enormous stucco faces representing Kinich Ahau, the Maya sun god, are still partially intact on the pyramid's facade. These masks, some nearly two meters tall, are among the most striking examples of Maya monumental art you'll find anywhere, and the site itself is large enough that you'll rarely feel crowded.

Parks

Laguna Milagros is a freshwater lagoon surrounded by jungle about 20 km outside the city, popular with locals for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking on weekends. The water is clear and calm, and small palapas along the shore offer a shady spot to spend a few hours. It's a genuinely refreshing stop, especially if you've spent the morning walking around ruins in the heat.

Parque Ecológico El Tucán is a green space within the city that functions as both a park and a small wildlife sanctuary. You can walk paths through tropical vegetation and spot birds, turtles, and the toucans the park is named for. It's a good option if you have younger travelers with you or simply want a quiet hour away from the streets.

Zona Libre de Chetumal (Free Trade Zone) is a large duty-free shopping district that draws visitors from across southern Mexico and Belize. Electronics, clothing, and imported goods are sold at prices you won't find elsewhere in the country. It's not a conventional tourist attraction, but if you need to stock up on anything before heading deeper into the Yucatán, this is a practical and lively place to do it. The energy of the market is worth experiencing on its own terms.
