Cerro de las Campanas is the hill on the western edge of the city where Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico was executed in 1867, effectively ending the Second Mexican Empire. The complex also served as the headquarters of Maximilian I during the siege of Querétaro in 1867, adding a layer of political history to the spiritual one. Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo is widely considered the finest example of Mexican Baroque architecture in Querétaro. The exterior is dramatic: flying buttresses shaped like inverted brackets, a tower that leans slightly, and an ornate facade that rewards close inspection. Inside, the gilded altarpieces are among the most elaborate in the region. It's easy to walk past without stopping; make sure you don't.

Templo de San Francisco de Asís anchors the eastern side of Jardín Zenea and is one of the oldest churches in the city. The tiled dome, covered in blue and white Talavera-style ceramics, is the detail most visitors remember. The attached former convent now houses the Museo Regional de Querétaro, making this corner of the plaza a natural stop for both art and history in a single visit.

Museums and galleries

Museo Regional de Querétaro occupies the former Franciscan convent attached to the Templo de San Francisco de Asís. Its collection spans pre-Hispanic artifacts, colonial religious art, and exhibits on the independence movement and the Reform War. The building itself, with its two-story arcaded courtyard, is as much a reason to visit as the objects inside. It gives you a coherent narrative of the region's history in a manageable space.

Museo de Arte de Querétaro (MAQRO) is housed in an 18th-century Augustinian convent whose courtyard is one of the most photographed interiors in the city. The permanent collection focuses on New Spanish Baroque painting, but temporary exhibitions regularly bring in contemporary Mexican artists.
