Standing on the deck and looking up at the towering masts gives you a real sense of the scale and skill involved in tall-ship sailing.

Emigration Museum (Muzeum Emigracji) occupies a beautifully restored interwar passenger terminal right on the waterfront. The building itself is a piece of history, because it was through this very port that hundreds of thousands of Poles emigrated in the early twentieth century. The permanent exhibition uses personal objects, letters, and photographs to tell those individual stories with real care, making it one of the more emotionally resonant museums in northern Poland.

Polish Naval Museum (Muzeum Marynarki Wojennej) gives you the broader sweep of Polish naval history in one place. Spread across an indoor collection and an open-air display of vessels and hardware, it covers everything from the origins of the Polish navy to Cold War-era submarines you can actually walk through. The outdoor section is particularly good for anyone travelling with curious kids.

Gdynia City Museum (Muzeum Miasta Gdyni) is the place to understand how this city came to exist at all. Gdynia was little more than a fishing village before Poland regained sea access after the First World War, and the museum charts that extraordinary transformation with architectural drawings, photographs, and everyday objects from the interwar boom years. The art deco design heritage of the city makes a lot more sense after an hour spent here.

Natural spaces

Kamienna Góra Hill & Funicular sits right in the heart of the city and rewards a visit at any time of day. A short, free funicular ride (the glass gondola covers 96 metres of track in around two minutes) lifts you to a hilltop park with panoramic views stretching across the Gulf of Gdańsk and, on a clear day, all the way to the Hel Peninsula. A 25-metre steel cross marks the summit, and the surrounding gardens and old villas make the walk back down worth taking slowly.

Orłowo Pier & Cliff is a short tram or bus ride south of the city centre, in the quieter residential district of Orłowo. The wooden pier stretches out into the Baltic, and just beside it a dramatic sandstone cliff drops straight to the beach below. It's a genuinely striking piece of coastline, the kind that makes you stop and look twice, and the beach at the foot of the cliff is one of the calmer spots for a swim in summer.

Skwer Kościuszki (Kościuszko Square) is the natural starting point for any walk along the Gdynia waterfront. This broad, tree-lined square connects the city centre directly to the pier where the museum ships are moored, and its open, airy layout reflects the confident urban planning that defines so much of Gdynia's character. Grab a coffee from one of the cafés along the edge and watch the ships before heading deeper into the city.

Gdynia Aquarium (Akwarium Gdyńskie) is run by the National Marine Fisheries Research Institute and focuses specifically on Baltic Sea species alongside tanks representing ocean environments from further afield. It's compact but well put together, and the displays on local marine ecosystems give it a more educational edge than a typical aquarium visit.

Gdynia Film Centre (Gdyńskie Centrum Filmowe) is the home of the Polish Film Festival, one of the most important film events in the country. Outside of festival season it functions as an arthouse cinema and cultural venue, screening Polish and international films in a thoughtfully designed space.
