The bronze figure of the Roman sea god feels entirely at home in a city that built its wealth on maritime trade. The Gdańsk Crane (Żuraw) is a 15th-century twin-towered structure on the Motława riverbank that was once the largest port crane in medieval Europe. Historic religious sites

St. Mary's Basilica (Bazylika Mariacka) is simply enormous. Completed in 1502 in the Brick Gothic style, it is considered one of the largest brick churches in the world and can hold around 25,000 people. Inside, the scale is almost disorienting. Pale stone columns rise to vaulted ceilings that seem impossibly high. Climb the 405 steps to the top of the 78-metre tower and you'll get one of the best panoramic views of the Old Town rooftops and the river beyond.

Oliwa Cathedral & Park sits in the quieter Oliwa district, a short tram ride from the city centre, and offers a very different pace. The cathedral's narrow, elongated facade conceals a surprisingly long interior, and its famous Baroque organ, one of the most elaborate in Europe, is the centrepiece of regular concerts held throughout the year. After the visit, the surrounding park, with its ponds, rose garden, and tree-lined paths, is a genuinely pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

Mariacka Street (Ulica Mariacka) connects St. Mary's Basilica to the waterfront and is arguably the most atmospheric street in Gdańsk. The street was meticulously rebuilt after the Second World War using historical records, and the result is a remarkably coherent piece of urban restoration.

Museums

European Solidarity Centre is built on the site of the Lenin Shipyard, where the Solidarity trade union movement was born in 1980. The building itself, clad in rusted steel that echoes the shipyard's industrial past, makes a statement before you even step inside. The permanent exhibition traces the history of Solidarity and the broader collapse of communism in Central Europe through original documents, photographs, and artefacts, including the original shipyard gates where workers posted their demands.

Museum of the Second World War opened in 2017 and quickly established itself as one of the most significant history museums in Europe. Its permanent exhibition covers the full sweep of the war from a global perspective while keeping Polish civilian experience at its core. The underground layout, dramatic use of original objects, and unflinching treatment of difficult subjects make it an emotionally demanding but essential visit for anyone travelling this part of Poland.

Westerplatte Monument & Peninsula lies about 7 kilometres from the city centre at the mouth of the port channel, where the first shots of the Second World War were fired on 1 September 1939. A small Polish garrison held out here for seven days against overwhelming German forces. The ruined barracks have been left largely intact, and the monumental granite memorial on the hill above gives the site a sombre, contemplative atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave.
