Capuchin Crypt sits quietly beneath the Capuchin Church on Kapucínské náměstí and is not for the faint-hearted. The natural ventilation of the crypt has preserved the mummified remains of monks and Baroque-era nobles for centuries, displayed in open coffins exactly as they were laid to rest. It is a sobering and genuinely fascinating place, a reminder of how differently earlier generations thought about death, memory, and the body.

Iconic buildings

Villa Tugendhat is one of the most important works of 20th-century architecture anywhere in Europe. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1930, the UNESCO-listed villa introduced an open-plan living space defined by an onyx partition wall and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the garden and city beyond. Guided tours must be booked in advance, and the detail on those tours (the retractable windows, the custom-designed furniture, the way light moves through the rooms) makes the effort entirely worthwhile.

Old Town Hall is the oldest secular building in Brno, with a history stretching back to the 13th century. Its Gothic portal is famously crooked. Legend has it the stonemason deliberately bent the pinnacle after the city refused to pay his full fee. Inside, the passageway is free to walk through and houses the stuffed "Brno Dragon" (actually a crocodile gifted to the city in 1608) and a wagon wheel whose origin is the subject of another local tall tale.

Freedom Square is the main public square at the centre of Brno's daily life. Lined with Baroque and Renaissance façades, it hosts markets, concerts, and the occasional art installation. The centrepiece is a striking modern astronomical clock installed in 2010. It releases a small marble at 11 a.m. each day from one of four slots, and nobody officially reveals which one, making it a small daily ritual for locals and visitors alike.

Moravian Museum is the second-largest museum in the Czech Republic and a serious institution worth several hours of your time. Spread across multiple buildings near Zelný trh, it holds natural history, archaeology, and ethnography collections that trace Moravia's story from prehistoric times to the modern era. The star exhibit is the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, a ceramic figurine over 25,000 years old and one of the oldest fired-clay objects ever discovered.

Brno Underground reveals a completely different city beneath the cobblestones. A network of medieval cellars and tunnels stretches under the historic centre, used over the centuries for storing food, sheltering residents, and, during plague outbreaks, as a mass burial site. Lužánky Park is the oldest public park in the Czech Republic, a green expanse in the Královo Pole district that has been open to the city since 1786. It is a relaxed, unpretentious place where students read on benches, families walk dogs, and the pace slows noticeably.
