The contrast between its elaborate interior and its relatively modest street presence makes the moment you step inside genuinely surprising.

Double Spiral Staircase (Doppelwendeltreppe) — Graz Burg is tucked inside the old imperial castle and easy to walk past without realising what you're looking at. Built in 1499–1500 under Emperor Maximilian I, the staircase consists of two intertwining spiral paths that share the same space but never actually meet. It's an engineering puzzle in stone that stonemasons solved without any of the tools we'd reach for today. Free to visit and about ten minutes of your time, but those ten minutes are well spent.

Cultural attractions

Styrian Armoury (Landeszeughaus) is the world's largest preserved historical armoury, holding around 32,000 pieces of armour, weapons, and military equipment dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The four floors of gleaming breastplates, pikes, and horse armour were kept in readiness to defend Styria against Ottoman incursions and were never actually used in battle, which is precisely why so much survived intact. Allow at least an hour and consider a guided tour to understand the sheer scale of what you're looking at.

Kunsthaus Graz is the city's contemporary art museum and its most visually striking building, a biomorphic blue structure that locals nicknamed "the friendly alien" when it opened in 2003. Inside, the programme focuses on international contemporary art with a rotating series of large-scale exhibitions. Even if modern art isn't usually your thing, the building itself is worth seeing from the outside, especially at night when the skin of the facade lights up.

Historic sites

Graz Old Town (Altstadt) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backbone of any visit. The streets between the Hauptplatz and the Schlossberg are lined with Renaissance courtyards, Baroque palaces, and arcaded passages you can wander through without paying a single entrance fee. What makes it work as a place rather than just a postcard is that people actually live and shop here. The old town is a functioning neighbourhood, not a museum piece.

Graz Cathedral (Dom zu Graz) is the city's main cathedral, sitting at the southern edge of the old town. Built in the 15th century, it holds a painted plague memorial on its outer wall, a rare surviving example of late Gothic exterior fresco work, as well as an interior that mixes Gothic structure with later Baroque furnishings. It's quieter than you'd expect for a city-centre church, which makes it a good place to slow down mid-afternoon.

Eggenberg Palace (Schloss Eggenberg) sits on the western edge of the city and is worth the short tram ride out. The palace was designed with symbolic intent: 365 windows, 24 state rooms, and four towers representing the four seasons. The grounds include a deer park where you can walk freely. The state rooms are only accessible by guided tour, but the peacocks wandering the gardens are entirely free to observe.

Natural spaces and viewpoints

Schlossberg (Castle Hill) & Clock Tower rises steeply above the old town and gives you the clearest possible sense of Graz's layout. You can take the funicular, the lift cut through the rock, or simply walk up the zigzagging paths. The climb takes about 20 minutes and is genuinely pleasant. The Clock Tower at the top is the city's most recognisable landmark, and the view from the hill stretches across the red rooftops all the way to the Alps on a clear day.

Iconic architecture

Murinsel is an artificial island sitting in the middle of the River Mur, connected to both banks by curving walkways. Designed by American artist Vito Acconci for the 2003 European Capital of Culture year, it houses a small café and an open-air amphitheatre. It's an odd, specific thing to have in a river, and that's exactly what makes it worth a look, especially from the bridges above, where the shell-like structure reads as a piece of sculpture as much as a building.
