Its four fountains and Levantine-style stonework make it one of the most photographed spots in the city. Arrive early in the morning to get a clear shot before the crowds gather around its base.

Konak Square (Konak Meydanı) is the civic heart of İzmir, where the waterfront, the old bazaar quarter, and the city's main ferry terminal all converge. The square itself is open and breezy, framed by palm trees and the blue of the bay. It's less a tourist attraction and more the place where everyday İzmir actually happens. Commuters, street vendors, and families all pass through here, and the energy shifts noticeably from morning rush to relaxed evening stroll.

Historic ruins

Agora of Smyrna (İzmir Agorası) sits in the middle of the modern city and dates back to the Hellenistic period, though much of what you see today is Roman reconstruction following a 2nd-century earthquake. The most striking feature is the lower level: a long gallery of massive stone arches that once supported the colonnaded marketplace above. Walking through them, it's surprisingly easy to picture the commercial life that once filled this space.

Kadifekale (Velvet Castle) crowns Mount Pagos at 186 metres above sea level and was originally built in the 3rd century BC, likely under Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's generals. The walls are weathered and partially ruined, but that's part of the appeal. You can wander freely among the ancient stonework with almost no barriers between you and the history. The view over the city and the Gulf of İzmir from up here is the best you'll find without a drone.

Ancient City of Ephesus is about 80 kilometres south of İzmir and is one of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere in the world. The marble-paved main street, the two-storey Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre, which could hold around 25,000 spectators, give a genuine sense of the city's former scale and ambition. Plan for at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes; the site is large and mostly uncovered.

Ancient City of Pergamon (Bergama) lies roughly 100 kilometres north of İzmir and rewards the journey with a dramatically sited acropolis perched high above the modern town of Bergama. The steep theatre, carved into the hillside at a near-vertiginous angle, is one of the most striking in the ancient world. The site also includes the remains of the famous Library of Pergamon, once considered a rival to Alexandria's.

Cultural museum

İzmir Archaeology Museum brings together finds from across the region, including sculptures, coins, and ceramics from Ephesus, Pergamon, and the Smyrna Agora, in a well-organised collection that gives real context to the outdoor sites you'll visit. The Roman-period statuary room is particularly strong, with several large marble figures in excellent condition. It's a manageable size, so two hours is enough to see it properly without museum fatigue setting in.

Urban market

Kemeraltı Bazaar is İzmir's historic covered market district, a dense labyrinth of lanes that has been a trading hub since the 17th century. You'll find everything from spice stalls and jewellers to leather goods and fresh produce, but the real draw is the architecture. Hans (caravanserais), mosques, and Ottoman fountains are tucked between the shops at almost every turn. Follow your nose toward the roasting chestnuts or fresh simit and let yourself get pleasantly lost.

Natural spaces

Kordon Promenade (Kordonboyu) stretches along the waterfront for several kilometres and is where İzmir comes to breathe. The wide, palm-lined path fills up in the evenings with joggers, cyclists, and people sitting at the open-air cafés watching the ferries cross the bay. Sunsets here, with the light dropping behind the hills on the far shore, are genuinely worth timing your day around.

Asansör (Historic Elevator) is a 19th-century public lift built into a tower in the Karataş neighbourhood to connect the lower streets with the hilltop Jewish quarter above. At the top, a rooftop terrace looks out over the rooftops and the sea. It's a quieter, more residential vantage point than Kadifekale, and the surrounding streets are full of colourful old houses worth exploring on foot.
