Gaziantep Museum of Archaeology sits a short walk from the city centre and covers the region's layered history from the Palaeolithic era through to the Byzantine period. The Hittite and Assyrian artefacts are particularly strong, and the layout makes it easy to follow the chronological thread without feeling overwhelmed. It's a solid first stop before you head out to explore the old town.

Hasan Süzer Ethnography Museum occupies a beautifully restored 19th-century stone mansion in the historic quarter. The rooms are arranged to show how a prosperous Gaziantep family would have lived, with traditional textiles, copper kitchenware, and embroidered cushions throughout. The architecture itself, with its carved ceilings and central courtyard, is as interesting as the exhibits inside.

Emine Göğüş Culinary Museum (Mutfak Müzesi) is dedicated entirely to the food culture of Gaziantep, which tells you everything you need to know about how seriously this city takes its cuisine. Dioramas and displays walk you through local recipes, kitchen tools, and the stories behind dishes like beyran soup and katmer. It's compact but genuinely engaging, and it will almost certainly send you straight to the nearest restaurant afterwards.

Gaziantep Toy Museum (Oyun ve Oyuncak Müzesi) is an unexpected delight tucked into a restored old house near the bazaar. The collection spans toys from across Turkey and beyond, including tin cars, wooden puppets, and hand-sewn dolls gathered over decades by a local collector. It works just as well for adults as it does for children, triggering a kind of quiet nostalgia that's hard to explain until you're standing in front of a glass case of 1960s tin robots.

Historic sites

Gaziantep Castle (Gaziantep Kalesi) & War Museum rises from the very centre of the city on a basalt mound that has been fortified since at least the Roman period. The castle itself is compact but photogenic, and the War Museum inside documents the Turkish War of Independence with particular focus on the defence of Gaziantep, a chapter of history the city is intensely proud of. The views from the ramparts over the old town are worth the climb alone.

Rumkale & Halfeti sit about an hour's drive from the city along the Euphrates, and the journey is part of the appeal. Rumkale is a dramatic fortress carved into a rocky promontory above the river, while nearby Halfeti is a village partially submerged by the Birecik Dam reservoir, its old stone houses now visible just below the waterline. Boat trips run between the two, and the combination of ruins, water, and landscape makes for one of the most atmospheric half-days in the region.

Kendirli Church is a small Armenian church dating back to the 19th century, quietly tucked into a residential neighbourhood in the old city. It has been restored and is one of the few surviving examples of Gaziantep's pre-20th-century Christian heritage. The building is modest from the outside, but the interior stonework and the sense of layered history make it worth seeking out on a walking tour of the historic quarter.

Market

Coppersmith Bazaar (Bakırcılar Çarşısı) is one of the most atmospheric corners of Gaziantep's old city, where craftsmen still shape copper trays, jugs, and coffee pots by hand using techniques passed down through generations. The sound of hammering echoes through the narrow lanes, and the workshops are open to the street so you can watch the work in progress. It's a good place to pick up something genuinely made in the city rather than a mass-produced souvenir.

Zoo

Gaziantep Zoo (Gaziantep Hayvanat Bahçesi) opened in 2001 and has grown into one of the largest zoos in Turkey, spread across a forested site on the edge of the city. The grounds are well maintained and spacious enough that a full visit takes most of a day. It's a popular spot with local families, and the natural setting among the trees gives it a more relaxed feel than many urban zoos.
