Yeşil Cami & Yeşil Türbe (Green Mosque & Green Tomb) stand side by side on a hillside in the Yeşiltepe neighbourhood and together form one of the finest examples of early Ottoman architecture anywhere in Turkey. The mosque's interior tilework, a deep layered turquoise that gives both buildings their name, was produced by craftsmen from Tabriz in the early 15th century. The adjacent tomb holds the sarcophagus of Sultan Mehmed I and is open to visitors throughout the day.

Tophane & Hisar (Bursa Castle) occupies the oldest part of the city, a plateau above the modern centre where the original Byzantine and then Ottoman fortifications once stood. Much of the wall has eroded over centuries, but the ramparts that remain offer some of the best panoramic views across Bursa's rooftops toward the plain below. Two Ottoman tombs inside the enclosure, those of Osman and Orhan Gazi, the founders of the Ottoman dynasty, make this a historically significant stop beyond the views alone.

Historic districts

Muradiye Complex (Muradiye Külliyesi) is a 15th-century Ottoman complex that includes a mosque, a medrese, and twelve royal tombs set within a walled garden. The tombs belong to various Ottoman princes and sultans, and several interiors are decorated with exceptional Iznik tiles. The garden is well maintained and unusually peaceful for a site so close to the city centre. A good place to slow down between more crowded attractions.

Cumalıkızık Village lies about ten kilometres east of central Bursa and has changed remarkably little since it was founded in the early Ottoman period. The village's narrow cobblestone lanes are lined with timber-framed houses, many of which are several hundred years old and still inhabited. A small cluster of tea houses and breakfast spots near the entrance makes it easy to spend a relaxed morning here before heading back into the city.

Markets

Koza Han (Silk Bazaar) is a 15th-century caravanserai built around a central courtyard with a small Ottoman fountain at its centre. It has been the hub of Bursa's silk trade for centuries, and the shops lining the arcaded galleries still sell silk scarves, cocoons, and fabric. In late spring and early summer, silk cocoon sellers set up stalls in the courtyard, which gives the space a particularly lively character during those months.

Kapalı Çarşı & Bedesten (Covered Bazaar) sits adjacent to Koza Han and forms the commercial core of the old city. The Bedesten, the inner vaulted hall, dates to the Ottoman period and was originally used for trading valuable goods. Today the covered market sells everything from jewellery and textiles to spices and everyday household items. It's a working bazaar, not a tourist set piece, and the mix of shoppers and traders gives it an authentic energy.

Bursa Museum of Turkish & Islamic Arts is housed in a restored Ottoman building near the Muradiye Complex and holds a well-curated collection of Anatolian folk art, traditional Bursa silk weaving equipment, Ottoman ceramics, and carved woodwork. The exhibits are clearly laid out and provide useful context for the architecture and craftsmanship you'll encounter throughout the rest of the city.

Uludağ & Bursa Teleferik (Cable Car) connects the city to the summit of Uludağ, the mountain that defines Bursa's skyline. The cable car ride covers a significant change in altitude and offers sweeping views over the city and the Marmara plain on clear days. At the top, the mountain is a ski resort in winter and a hiking and picnic destination in summer. The contrast with the urban streets below is striking.

Gölyazı (Apollonia ad Rhyndacum) is a small village built on a peninsula jutting into Lake Uluabat, about 35 kilometres west of Bursa. The settlement sits directly on top of the ancient Greek city of Apollonia ad Rhyndacum, which dates back to the 6th century BC, and scattered ruins, column fragments, carved stone blocks, are visible around the village lanes and along the shoreline. Fishermen still work the lake here, and the combination of ancient remains and quiet waterside life makes it one of the more unusual half-day trips from the city.
