Museums

Mevlana Museum is the spiritual heart of Konya and arguably the most visited site in the entire city. Originally the lodge of the Mevlevi order founded by the poet and mystic Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī, it was converted into a museum in 1926. Inside, you'll find Rumi's elaborately decorated tomb, dervish robes, centuries-old manuscripts, and musical instruments used in Sema ceremonies. The green-tiled dome visible from across the city has become the defining symbol of Konya itself.

Karatay Medrese is a 13th-century Seljuk theological school that now houses a striking collection of ceramic tiles. The building itself is the exhibit. The interior dome is covered in intricate turquoise and dark blue tilework that forms a mesmerising geometric canopy overhead. Built in 1251 by the Seljuk vizier Celaleddin Karatay, it's a compact visit but one of the most visually arresting spaces in the city.

İnce Minare Museum occupies a former Seljuk medrese distinguished by its elaborately carved stone portal and slender minaret, the "thin minaret" the name refers to. Today it holds a collection of Seljuk stone and wood carvings rescued from sites across the region. The craftsmanship on the doorway alone is worth the stop; few buildings in Turkey pack this much decorative detail into a single facade.

Konyanuma Panorama Museum offers a completely different kind of experience. Opened in 2013, it uses 360-degree panoramic painting and three-dimensional figures to reconstruct Konya's social life in the 13th century at the height of Seljuk power. You'll see Rumi performing the Sema, market scenes, sultans, and city walls, all rendered at an impressive scale. It's one of Turkey's three largest panoramic museums and a genuinely engaging way to contextualise everything else you see in the city.

Historic religious sites

Alâeddin Mosque stands on Alâeddin Hill at the centre of Konya and is the oldest and largest mosque in the city. Built over several decades during the 12th and 13th centuries by successive Seljuk sultans, it has a calm, columned interior supported by ancient marble columns taken from earlier Roman and Byzantine structures. The tombs of eight Seljuk sultans are housed in a mausoleum attached to the building, making it as much a dynastic monument as a place of worship.

Sahip Ata Complex is a Seljuk-era ensemble that includes a mosque, a türbe (mausoleum), and the remains of a hamam, all commissioned in the 13th century by the statesman Sahip Ata Fahreddin Ali. The carved stone portal ranks among the finest examples of Seljuk decorative stonework in Konya, and the complex as a whole gives a strong sense of how religious, civic, and funerary architecture were woven together in medieval Anatolian city planning.

Aziziye Mosque brings a different architectural flavour to the city. Built in the Ottoman Baroque style and reconstructed in the late 19th century, its twin minarets and ornate facade stand in pleasing contrast to the austere Seljuk stone you'll encounter elsewhere in Konya. The interior is warm and richly decorated, and the mosque remains an active place of worship, so visiting outside prayer times is recommended.

Historic district

Sille Village sits about eight kilometres northwest of central Konya and feels like a different world. This ancient settlement has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years and retains a streetscape of old stone houses, a Byzantine-era rock church, and a small mosque. It's a relaxed place to walk around, and the Aya Elena Church, carved partly into the cliff face, is the kind of detail that makes the Konya bus trip worthwhile even for visitors who think they've seen everything.

Ruins

Çatalhöyük is one of the most significant archaeological sites on earth. Located southeast of Konya on the plain, this Neolithic settlement dates back to around 7400 BCE and was home to thousands of people living in densely packed mud-brick houses, entered through roof hatches rather than street-level doors. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, the site has an on-site museum and active excavation areas you can observe, making it a rare chance to stand at what was once the edge of human civilisation.

Mevlana Cultural Center is a modern venue that hosts Sema ceremonies, concerts, and cultural events connected to the living Mevlevi tradition. Unlike the museum, this is a place where the tradition is still performed rather than archived. Attending a Sema here, the meditative whirling ritual of the dervishes, is one of the most memorable things you can do in Konya.
