La Lonja de Zaragoza is a 16th-century merchants' exchange hall that sits between the two cathedrals on Plaza del Pilar. The Renaissance facade is elegant but restrained; the real reward is stepping inside to see the soaring vaulted ceiling supported by slender columns. The space was originally designed for commerce and now hosts temporary art and cultural exhibitions throughout the year.

Historic ruins and palaces

Palacio de la Aljafería is a fortified palace built in the second half of the 11th century by the Moorish rulers of Zaragoza, and it is one of the best-preserved examples of Moorish architecture outside Andalusia. The delicate interlaced arches of the inner courtyard are the highlight, but the palace also contains later additions from the Catholic Monarchs, giving you a compressed tour through several centuries of Aragonese power in a single visit.

Roman Theatre of Caesaraugusta was discovered by accident in 1972 during construction work, and what excavators found was the largest Roman theatre in all of Hispania: a structure that once seated 6,000 spectators. The museum built around the ruins uses walkways, scale models, and a short audiovisual presentation to help you picture the original building, making it one of the most engaging archaeology sites in the country.

Art galleries

Museo Goya – Colección Ibercaja is housed in a handsome 16th-century Aragonese mansion and holds around 500 works on display from a collection of over 1,000 pieces. The focus is Francisco de Goya, Zaragoza's own son, with 15 major paintings and the complete collection of his engravings and drawings, including the sharply satirical Los Caprichos series. The surrounding rooms trace Spanish painting from the 16th to the 20th century, giving Goya's work meaningful context.

Museo Pablo Serrano celebrates the Aragonese sculptor Pablo Serrano with a purpose-built space that gives his large-scale bronze and iron works the room they need. The permanent collection spans his full career, from early figurative pieces to the abstract forms he developed later in life, and the building itself, with its generous natural light, is worth noting as a piece of architecture in its own right.

Parks and open spaces

Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta is Zaragoza's largest urban park, a wide green expanse of tree-lined paths, rose gardens, and open lawns that stretches across the south of the city. Locals come here to walk, run, and sit on a bench with a coffee. It offers a genuine break from the stone and cobbles of the old town, and it's particularly pleasant in spring when the rose garden is in full colour.

Squares and plazas

Plaza del Pilar is the long, open square that runs between the Basílica and La Seo, functioning as the social centre of Zaragoza. The paving is broad and uncluttered, which gives you a clear view of both cathedrals at once: a perspective that makes the scale of the city's religious heritage immediately apparent. In the evenings, the square fills with people of all ages, and the fountain at its centre becomes a natural meeting point.

Historic districts

El Tubo – Old Town Tapas District is the tangle of narrow streets north of Plaza del Pilar where Zaragoza's tapas culture is most concentrated. Bars here serve pintxos and tapas from late morning until well past midnight, and the tradition of moving from bar to bar, ordering a small plate and a glass of wine at each, is taken seriously. Calle Estébanes and Calle Mártires are the two streets to start on, but the best approach is simply to follow the crowds.
