La Lanterna stands 77 metres tall on a rocky promontory west of the port, making it the tallest lighthouse in the Mediterranean. Dating back in some form to 1128 and reaching its definitive shape in 1543, it has guided ships into the harbour for nearly nine centuries. A small museum at the base traces the history of the lighthouse and the keepers who tended it, and the walk along the old city walls to reach it offers a fine view of the industrial port below.

Castello d'Albertis sits on a hilltop above the western city and looks more like a Scottish baronial fantasy than an Italian palazzo. That is essentially what it is. The 19th-century owner, Captain Enrico Alberto d'Albertis, rebuilt a medieval tower into this eccentric residence after his voyages around the world. Musei di Strada Nuova (Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco & Palazzo Tursi) line the Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO-listed street of aristocratic palaces.
