Playa La Chimba & Coastal Reserve stretches north of the city and offers a noticeably quieter experience than Balneario Municipal. The adjacent coastal reserve protects a strip of shoreline where Humboldt penguins occasionally appear, particularly outside the summer season. Walking through it, you'll notice the mix of Victorian-influenced buildings and Bolivian-era structures that reflect Antofagasta's complicated border history. The city was Bolivian until the War of the Pacific in 1879. The streets are short and easy to cover on foot in an hour or two.

Culture and urban landmarks

Museo Regional de Antofagasta occupies a handsome Victorian customs house near the waterfront. The collection traces the region's history from pre-Columbian cultures through the nitrate era and into the 20th century, with particular depth on the mining industry that built the city. The building itself is worth a look even if you only step inside briefly.

Plaza Colón & the Clock Tower is the city's central square, anchored by a clock tower gifted to Antofagasta by the British community in the early 1900s, a reminder of how many nationalities passed through during the nitrate boom. The plaza fills up in the evenings, with food vendors and families taking over the benches, and it makes a natural starting or ending point for any walk through the centre.

Estación de Ferrocarril is Antofagasta's old railway station, a handsome building that once served the lines connecting the port to the Bolivian interior. The rail network here was the economic backbone of the entire region for decades. The station no longer operates passenger services, but the architecture alone justifies a stop. It's one of the more photogenic corners of the city.
