Barrio Bellavista sits at the foot of Cerro San Cristóbal and is Santiago's most creatively charged neighbourhood. Murals cover entire building facades, independent restaurants spill onto narrow streets, and the former home of poet Pablo Neruda, La Chascona, draws visitors looking to understand the man behind the verse. It's the kind of place where an afternoon walk turns into an evening without you noticing.

Barrio Lastarria & Parque Forestal is where Santiago feels most like a European capital, in the best possible way. Tree-lined Parque Forestal runs alongside the Mapocho River, and the adjacent Lastarria neighbourhood packs in bookshops, art-house cinemas, wine bars, and weekend antique markets within a few compact blocks. The Museo de Bellas Artes anchors the park's eastern end, and the whole area is ideal for an unhurried morning or a long Sunday afternoon.

Museums

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino opened in December 1981 and houses one of the most important collections of pre-Columbian art in South America. Spread across a beautifully restored colonial building near Plaza de Armas, the museum covers cultures from Mexico to Patagonia, including textiles, ceramics, gold work, and ritual objects spanning thousands of years. The textile room alone, with its extraordinary Andean weavings, justifies the visit.

Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos is a serious and carefully designed space dedicated to the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship between 1973 and 1990. The building itself, all glass and angular concrete, feels deliberately open and transparent, a counterpoint to the secrecy of the era it documents. Testimonies, photographs, and personal objects make the history immediate and human rather than abstract. It's a sobering few hours, and an essential one.

Iconic buildings

Palacio de La Moneda is Chile's seat of government and one of the most recognisable buildings in Latin America. Built in the late 18th century as the colonial mint, it became the presidential palace in 1846 and gained global attention during the 1973 coup. The exterior plaza is open to the public, and the changing of the guard on alternating days draws a crowd. Beneath the building, the Centro Cultural La Moneda hosts free and low-cost exhibitions year-round.

Sky Costanera (Gran Torre Santiago) is the tallest building in Latin America, standing 300 metres tall across 64 floors in the Providencia district. The observation deck near the top offers a 360-degree view of the city that puts everything else you've seen into geographic context, with the Andes to the east, the coastal range to the west, and the full urban sprawl in between. On a clear winter day, the snow line feels close enough to touch.

Plaza de Armas is the historic heart of Santiago and the point from which the city was originally measured. The square is framed by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the Palacio de la Real Audiencia, and its central garden fills daily with chess players, street performers, and office workers on lunch breaks. It's not a quiet spot, but it's a genuinely alive one, and a useful first stop for getting your bearings in the city.

Mercado Central de Santiago is the city's main covered market, housed in a cast-iron structure that was prefabricated in England and assembled here in the 1870s. The interior is dominated by seafood stalls and restaurant counters serving caldillo de congrio, ceviche, and fresh shellfish. Go early on a weekend morning when the market is at its most active, and eat at one of the smaller counters around the perimeter rather than the larger restaurants in the centre.
