Historic sites

Plaza de Armas de La Serena is the natural starting point for any visit. It is a well-kept central square lined with palms and stone benches, surrounded by government buildings, the cathedral, and a handful of cafés. On weekday mornings it fills with locals going about their routines; on weekends it becomes a gathering place for families and street musicians. The fountain at its centre is a useful landmark and a good spot to get your bearings before heading deeper into the city.

Faro Monumental de La Serena is a lighthouse that stands at the southern end of the beach strip, built in the 1950s as much as a civic monument as a navigational aid. You can walk around its base and look out over the Pacific from the surrounding plaza. It appears on almost every postcard of the city, but seeing it in person, especially at dusk when the light catches the stone, is a different experience entirely.

Barrio Patrimonial (Heritage District) is the part of La Serena where the colonial streetscape is best preserved. Walking through it, you will notice the consistent use of stone facades, wrought-iron balconies, and narrow pavements that have changed little in appearance over generations. It is a working neighbourhood, not a museum piece, so you will find local bakeries and hardware shops alongside the historic architecture. The contrast makes it feel lived-in and genuine.

Natural spaces

Avenida del Mar (La Serena Beach Strip) stretches for several kilometres along the Pacific coast and is the city's most popular outdoor space. The beach itself is wide and sandy, and the avenue running alongside it is lined with restaurants, ice cream stands, and rental shops for bikes and boards. It is busiest in the Chilean summer (December to February), but outside those months you can walk the full length of it in relative quiet, with the cold Humboldt Current keeping the water brisk and the air clear.

Parque Japonés (Japanese Garden) offers a quieter counterpoint to the beach. Laid out with koi ponds, stone lanterns, and carefully pruned plantings, it is a small but well-maintained space near the city centre. Bring a book, find a bench near the water, and spend an hour away from the noise of the main streets.

Valle del Elqui (Elqui Valley) begins just east of La Serena and stretches inland through a narrow, sun-baked river valley famous for producing pisco, Chile's national spirit. The drive alone is worth the trip: terraced vineyards climb the hillsides, and the light in the late afternoon turns everything a deep amber. Several small distilleries along the route offer tastings, and the valley's exceptionally dry air and minimal light pollution make it one of the best places in South America for stargazing.

Museo Arqueológico de La Serena holds one of Chile's most important collections of pre-Columbian artefacts, including a full-sized Moai (the carved stone figures associated with Easter Island), which alone makes a visit worthwhile. The museum traces the cultures of the Atacama and Coquimbo regions across thousands of years, with well-organised displays that give real context to what you are looking at. Allow at least an hour and a half to do it justice.

Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory sits at around 2,200 metres above sea level in the mountains east of La Serena and has been a centre of serious astronomical research since the 1960s. Its flagship instrument, the 4-metre Víctor Blanco Telescope, was used as part of the Dark Energy Survey, one of the most ambitious sky-mapping projects ever undertaken. Guided visits are available and give you access to the dome and instruments, putting the valley's famous night skies into sharp scientific perspective.
