Valparaíso Street Art & Open-Air Murals turn the city's hills into a permanent, ever-changing gallery. Unlike street art scenes that cluster in one district, Valparaíso's murals spread across entire hillsides. Stairways, retaining walls, and the sides of houses all become canvases. Political commentary, surrealist imagery, and pure colour experiments sit side by side. Palacio Baburizza – Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes occupies one of the most architecturally extravagant buildings on Cerro Alegre, an early 20th-century Art Nouveau palace built for a Croatian nitrate merchant. Inside, the permanent collection focuses on Chilean and European painting from the 19th and early 20th centuries, with particular strength in landscape work. The building itself, ornate wooden balconies, tiled floors, and a distinctive green facade, competes with the art for your attention throughout.

Museums

La Sebastiana – Casa Museo Pablo Neruda is perched high on Cerro Bellavista and offers one of the most personal encounters with Chile's Nobel Prize-winning poet you'll find anywhere. Neruda designed the house specifically as a place for parties and for watching the city's New Year fireworks over the bay. The five floors are packed with his collections: ships in bottles, coloured glass, a miniature bar, and a rocking horse. Open Tuesday to Sunday, it's a compact visit that leaves a lasting impression.

Museo Naval y Marítimo de Valparaíso tells the story of Chile's relationship with the sea through ship models, navigational instruments, uniforms, and documents spanning several centuries. The museum pays particular attention to the War of the Pacific and the figures of Arturo Prat and Lord Cochrane, both central to Chilean naval identity. It's housed in a handsome building on Cerro Artillería and pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby viewpoint. The two together give you both the history and the view.

Natural spaces and viewpoints

Paseo 21 de Mayo (Cerro Artillería Viewpoint) delivers one of the widest panoramas in the city, taking in the full sweep of the bay, the container port, and the Pacific horizon beyond. The terrace sits next to the former Naval School and is reached via the Ascensor Artillería, one of the city's oldest funiculars. Come in the late afternoon when the light softens and the cargo ships in the harbour catch a warm glow. It's the kind of view that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

Paseo Gervasoni & Paseo Yugoslavo are two connected promenade terraces on Cerro Concepción that offer a quieter alternative to the more visited lookouts. Historic landmarks

Plaza Sotomayor is the ceremonial heart of Valparaíso, a large open square facing the port where the city's civic and maritime identities meet. The imposing blue-grey building of the former Intendencia dominates one side, while the Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique marks the square's centre, beneath which the remains of naval hero Arturo Prat are interred. It's a natural starting point for exploring the lower city, and the constant movement of port workers, commuters, and visitors gives it a genuine sense of purpose.

Historic Ascensores (Funiculars) are as much a part of Valparaíso's identity as its painted hills. Built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city once had over 40 of these cable-driven lifts connecting the lower city to the hillside neighbourhoods above. Around 16 historic ascensores remain today, with a handful operating consistently. Each one is slightly different, some are wooden, some tiled, some barely wider than a doorway, and a small fare gets you a ride that feels unchanged from a hundred years ago.
