Historic sites

Casco Viejo (Old Town) is the original heart of Bilbao, a tight grid of medieval streets known locally as Las Siete Calles — the Seven Streets. This is where you come to eat, drink, and get a feel for everyday Basque life. The covered arcades shelter pintxos bars that have been feeding the neighbourhood for generations, and the weekend market on Plaza Nueva draws locals rather than tourists. Allow a couple of hours to wander without a plan.

Catedral de Santiago anchors the Casco Viejo with a quiet authority. Construction began in the 14th century, and the Gothic nave still feels impressively tall and spare inside, with little of the heavy ornamentation you find in Castilian cathedrals. The cloister is the highlight, a delicate two-storey arcade that somehow survived centuries of floods and rebuilding. Parks and viewpoints

Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park is Bilbao's most elegant green space, a formal 19th-century park with a duck pond, ornamental fountains, and wide tree-lined paths. It connects the Fine Arts Museum to the newer districts of the city and is a favourite spot for a slow afternoon walk. The park feels genuinely local. Families, dog walkers, and students rather than tour groups.

Mount Artxanda gives you the clearest possible sense of Bilbao's geography. Bridges

Zubizuri Bridge is a pedestrian footbridge designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 1997, the same year as the Guggenheim. Its white arched frame and glass-panelled walkway curve elegantly over the Nervión, connecting the Ensanche district to the riverfront promenade. It's one of several striking bridges along this stretch of river, but the Zubizuri is the most photogenic and the most pleasant to actually walk across.

Vizcaya Bridge sits about 15 minutes from the city centre and is worth the short trip. Completed in 1893 and designed by Basque architect Alberto de Palacio, it's the world's oldest transporter bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still carries passengers and cars across the Nervión estuary on a suspended gondola. Around six million people use it every year. It's working infrastructure and a living monument at the same time.

Mercado de la Ribera stands on the riverbank of the Casco Viejo and claims to be one of the largest covered markets in Europe. The Art Deco building dates from 1929 and has three floors of fresh produce, fish, meat, and pintxos bars. Go in the morning when the fish stalls are at their liveliest, or stop by at lunchtime when the upper-floor bars fill up with market workers and locals on their break.

San Mamés Stadium is home to Athletic Club, one of the few top-flight European football clubs that fields only players from the Basque Country. The current stadium, opened in 2013 and holding just over 53,000 spectators, replaced a beloved older ground on the same site. Guided tours take you through the dressing rooms, the pitch-side tunnel, and a museum that traces the club's unusual identity. Even outside matchdays, the atmosphere around the stadium is worth experiencing.
