Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of those cities that rewards slow exploration. Grand 18th-century stone facades line the Garonne riverfront, wine culture runs deep, and there are far more things to do in Bordeaux than a single visit can cover. Taking a FlixBus to Bordeaux drops you right into southwest France, making it an easy and affordable addition to any European itinerary. If you're drawn by history, architecture, or simply the pleasure of wandering a beautifully preserved city, Bordeaux delivers on every front.

Cultural museums

La Cité du Vin is unlike any wine museum you've encountered before. Housed in a sinuous, copper-tinted building on the banks of the Garonne, it traces the global story of wine across civilisations and continents rather than just the local vineyards. The permanent collection uses immersive installations, scent diffusers, and interactive displays to make the subject accessible to seasoned sommeliers and complete beginners alike. A ticket includes a tasting session on the panoramic top floor, where the views over the river are as memorable as the wine.

Musée d'Aquitaine tells the long story of the region from prehistoric times through to the 20th century, with a collection substantial enough to fill several hours. Standout pieces include Gallo-Roman sculptures and artefacts from ancient Burdigala, the Roman city that once stood where Bordeaux is today. The museum also holds one of the most significant collections of objects related to the Atlantic slave trade in France, presented with careful historical context. Entry is free for the permanent collection, which makes it one of the best-value stops on any Bordeaux itinerary.

Historic monuments and ruins

Grosse Cloche is one of the oldest belfries in France, a medieval gateway-tower that once served as the city's official clock and rang to announce the start of the grape harvest each year. It sits on the ancient Roman road that crossed the city, and its two round towers and ornate ironwork bell cage make it one of the most photographed spots in Bordeaux. You can admire it from street level for free, and the surrounding Saint-Éloi neighbourhood is well worth a slow wander.

Palais Gallien is the only visible remnant of Roman Bordeaux, and it's a striking one. Built around the 2nd to 3rd century AD, this amphitheatre once seated an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and animal hunts. Today, fragments of its arched stone walls rise up to 22 metres between apartment buildings in the Fondaudège district, an almost surreal collision of ancient and everyday. The site is free to visit and genuinely atmospheric, especially in the early morning when the streets are quiet.

Historic religious sites

Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux has shaped the Bordeaux skyline for nearly a thousand years. The Gothic nave is one of the longest in France, and the carved tympanum above the Royal Portal is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture. The cathedral also served as the venue for the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to the future Louis VII of France in 1137, a union that reshaped the political map of medieval Europe.

Viewpoints

Tour Pey-Berland stands just beside the cathedral but is actually a separate structure, a 15th-century Gothic bell tower built independently to prevent its bells from damaging the cathedral walls through vibration. Climbing its 231 steps brings you to a platform with a panoramic view over the rooftops of old Bordeaux, the Garonne, and the surrounding countryside on clear days. The gilded statue of Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine at the very top is visible from much of the city below.

Urban spaces

Place de la Bourse and Miroir d'Eau form one of the most visually striking public spaces in France. The Place de la Bourse is an 18th-century neoclassical ensemble designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, and directly in front of it lies the Miroir d'Eau, a 3,450-square-metre reflecting pool inaugurated in 2006 that alternates between a still mirror surface and a low mist display. At dusk, when the stone facades glow amber and their reflections shimmer across the water, it's genuinely hard to look away.

Pont de Pierre was the first bridge to span the Garonne at Bordeaux, completed in 1822 on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. Its seventeen arches, one for each letter in his name according to local lore, stretch nearly 500 metres across the river. Walking it gives you a sweeping perspective on the city's waterfront and is one of the most pleasant ways to cross between the two banks.

Gardens

Jardin Public de Bordeaux is a 10-hectare green space in the city centre that has been welcoming residents since the 18th century. It combines formal French garden design with more relaxed English-style landscaping, and it's home to the Natural History Museum of Bordeaux as well as a botanical garden with labelled plant collections. On weekday afternoons it's a calm retreat from the stone and traffic of the city; on weekends, families take over the lawns and the old carousel near the entrance.

Theater and opera

Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is considered one of the finest neoclassical theatres in Europe, designed by Victor Louis and inaugurated in 1780. Its colonnaded facade of twelve Corinthian columns faces a grand square, and the interior, all velvet, gilded stucco, and a painted ceiling, served as the direct inspiration for Charles Garnier when he designed the Paris Opéra. The theatre is still a working venue for opera and ballet, so checking the programme and catching a performance here is one of the most rewarding things to do in Bordeaux.
